Ironic reception in Europe

When this film reached Italy, it played to almost empty houses, where the laughs were thin (and most of the people attending were gays). But when it opened in Germany, albeit in a few places, the theaters were packed with average Germans, roaring at the comic and satirical depictions of Italian family culture. The gay plotline was a mere vehicle to show off the overblown, loud, melodramatic Italian stereotypes that the Germans just eat up.

Ironic, no?

Well in Italy, maybe people don't see the need to watch a movie filled with N.American clichees about italians. Besides Italian Cinema has enough of it's own comedies coming out...whereas in Germany people like to see this kind of film, and also italian emigrants are more likely to watch it, than italians in Italy

Do people in Italy like "The Sopranos"?
Do people in Italy admit that their culture has been homophobic, with lots of closet cases?

Italian Americans are very different to Italians. It would be a mistake to assume we are all like the Jersey Shore.

As far as I know, and based on ratings, people in Italy love "The Sopranos" one of the most successful shows, even though on Free-Tv it's shown at late night; or on Pay-Tv

Nope, 'cause they're just as homophobic (or not) as in most other countries within the European Union.
