This is NOT the movie you think it is.

This movie is about a MALE teacher who goes looking for a child who never comes to school. It is NOT the movie about the volunteer care-taker who goes to look after an old lady. Confusingly they are both titled "Ju-On" but this movie is actually called Ju-On: The Curse & The other one about the volunteer care-taker is called Ju-On: The Grudge. I'm telling you this because half the people on this forum think we're talking about Ju-On: The Grudge. Also, the cover for Ju-On: The Curse is wrong. That is the Ju-On: The Grudge cover.

Thank you so much for telling people this STRAIGHT UP! I love this movie, in fact Ju-On The Curse is the only worthwhile watching in the series (The other three are utter garbage), and I hate to see people come on here and randomly interject about Ju-On The Grudge.

Apparently what neither of you realize is that Ju-On: The curse 1 and 2 were the original 2 direct to video editions of yes you guessed it...what would later become known as Ju-On - The Grudge 1 and 2. Each of the 4 films... and to a lesser degree the 2 American versions... have their well deserved place in the complete series.

And hey...if ya really wanna get technical about it the short films 4444444444 and Katasumi (Both included on the North American Directors Cut of The Grudge) were both directly tied into the series as well.

reply

Um, wrong. JU-ON THE CURSE 1 was direct-to-video. JU-ON THE CURSE 2 was released into theaters for it's one-week run in late March of 2000, and was released on video in April of the same year.

Wait.. at the risk of seeming like an idiot, were they both directed by Shimizu? Becuase the one I saw had this cast, was directed by Shimizu and had the cover that's shown here.. but I could've sworn that their was a volunteer care-taker in the beginning.

All of the Ju-On movies were directed by shimizu. The cover that is shown here is the cover of Ju-on: The Grudge. So it is the wrong cover on this page (as was said before).

reply

Was Chiaki Kuriyama in more than one or is this another mix up like the cover? Not trying to be dumb as dirt here, just confused because Kuriyama was in the one I saw and it did have that cover. I also didn't realize that Shimizu directed all of them, thanks for clearing that up though.

Chiaki was only in the first "Ju-On: The Curse", i.e. the very first movie.

reply

Ahh.. ok, so it's just the cover and title that's wonky then? Ergh..

But thanks! That clears it up quite a bit.. and yes I edited this post because I kind of lost the plot for a moment.

So.....there are actually 4 Japanese Ju-On movies and then 2 American 'The Grudge' movies? Which one of the Japanese movies were the remakes based off of?

reply

ye there are 4 japanese and 2 american i'm pretty sure the american ones were remakes of the 2 grudge films, and all were directed by the same person.

Well, I didn't really like any of them. But the Japanese versions were way better than the American one's. What the hell was the director thinking when he made the American versions?

Money.

In fact... both movies and its sequels have the same title. "Ju-on" & "Ju-on 2" (2000 & 2000) (2002 & 2003) all directed by Shimizu. It is confusing as hell. Then we have the "The Curse" "The Grudge" added subtitles... so... get ready for confusing again with the american "The Grudge" remakes.

Confusing as hell. I remember watching "Ju-on: The Grudge" first... then its all messed up... probably Ju-on then... I think that after I watched I don't know which sequel... the the remake...

I'm lost in this series, but... I enjoyed the very very first one (notthe shorts)

reply

It's not that confusing, just watch them in order that they were made. All four Japanese movies are watched in order and don't include the American movies in it.

reply

This movie was exactly what I thought it was, so thanks for projecting your own confusion onto others.

Well, I thought THIS JU-ON (2000) was about the male teacher, and the JU-ON (2003) was the popular one about the young volunteer.

SO, THIS IS THE MOVIE I think it is. And all that "the grudge", "the curse" or whatever, it's been added to english speakers, so YOU people don't get confused.
We know the 2 short films from 1998, this JU-ON video movie, the JU-ON 2 from 2000 and then you got your so famous JU-ON from 2003, remaked with USA Buffy's actress (the tv series' Buffy, not the original actress from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" film, so you don't get confused).

I loved all 4 Japanese movies, but I think the first one (TV version) was a little more scarier than the others. and I've also seen the first American remake called "The Grudge" and it was an abomination, IMO. it seriously sucked, compared to the original...
