Indeed, very interesting, for this story, and many others. One thing which stood out for me was an early press report on Michael, which pretty much had him tried, convicted and all ready and waiting for a prison cell.

One of the statements used was (allegedly a direct police quote):

"He dressed in black and took his meals in his room"

Fire up the electric chair, quick sharp! Taking his meals in his own room.. that's evidence enough for me. As for dressing in all black, look at the copious amounts of people Johnny Cash murdered in his life time. Come to think of it, I dress all in black.. I'm off to commit my 19th murder shortly....

As for the police assertion that he wasn't distraught enough.. the poor kid had just lost his sister. EVERYONE reacts differently to grief, and many retreat into a "shell", not managing to shed a tear for months. I watched a programme today with Michael being interviewed, and for a young man who had suffered the triple tragedy of losing his sister, being accused of her murder, and then, just to rub salt in some very sore wounds, being coerced, intimidated and downright bullied into a confession, he came across as remarkably well adjusted, erudite, intelligent and charming. I sincerely hope every single officer who took part in the shocking treatment he received was thoroughly reprimanded, or in the case of the lead interrogator, fired.

As for Michael, I can only hope the rest of his life brings him happiness. An incredibly brave young man.

When did the murder happen?

January 20, 1998. A local homeless schizophrenic, Richard Tuite, was convicted of the crime after a shirt of his was found to hold a spot of Stephanie Crowe's blood. Witnesses allege Tuite had been seen in the area on the night of her murder. Tuite was found guilty of manslaughter in 2004, six years after the crime took place.

It says that according to the police, "Stephanie was stabbed nine times in the chest and neck with a 10-inch hunting knife, the blade wiping itself clean as it passed back and forth through the comforter that kept her warm." That statement is so patently absurd! You cannot wipe blood off a blade that easily. There would still have to be enough traces of the blood on it for any forensic lab to find.

Even if the police did not know that (though they should), the prosecutors should have immediately seen how absurd that was and should have told the police to do their job right.

This table is too small for
your beautiful imagination.

Honestly that is something you can learn just from watching CSI. Blood is very difficult to clean off. Even if you don't see it, there will still be blood evidence on the blade or wherever.

reply

Don't you know that most of technologies in CSI are fictional ?

reply

Microscopes can be used to look inside the handle of the knife for blood... the comforter by no means would have been able to "clean all the blood off."

Also, Luminol is not fictional... it reacts to the iron in blood and turns color (pink if I remember right). A lot of CSI's technology is "real," maybe just not the huge touch screen transparent computer.

The trouble is that the district attorneys are like the police. They want a conviction at any cost especially when they are seeking higher political office. Furthermore, if they challenge the police, the police will be less cooperative with helping the district attorneys. When is the last time, a district attorney actually help clean out the local police or sheriff department?

Thanks for that. I was surprised that the whole first part of the article proceeded on the assumption that Michael was guilty, and then went on to discuss the intricacies of sibling jealousy, hatred and murder. Only later did it get around to noting that he and his friends had been acquitted and to interview him about the events and the film. All in all it was an interesting read. I hope that Michael will lead a fulfilling and untroubled life from here on out.
