Why did they accuse Michael in the first place?

Hello, I'm watching this movie now and am wondering...why exactly did they accuse him in the first place? Was it because of the video games and drawings they found? OR was it just because they simply needd someone? This whole thing seems so unbelievable...Havent finished the movie yet. Thanks in advance

I believe it to be a testament of how inefficient and unreliable the Police can be when and if they want to; they usually have the culprit(s) within nose range and either pave the way for them to escape or just let them go unknowingly!! And then, on the rebound, they look for an innocent element to bestow guilt on.

What kind of a mind could a police detective have to frame an innocent person especially a child if they themselves know the person is likely innocent? just to further their careers? Such a police officer or detective would themselves have to be a criminal psychopath to do such a thing.

The kind that do not want to do their jobs. It's reminds me of the Jeffrey Dahmer case. The police was responding to a call of a 14 year old boy running down the streets naked at 2am in the morning. The boy appears to be drug. ..and what did the police do, they return the drugged out underage naked boy (who's picture was on the back of a milk carton) back to Jeffrey Dahmer, even after the boy told police that Jeffery tried to kill him. The police was taking the easy way out.

According to Wikipedia, Michael "was targeted by police when he seemed 'distant and preoccupied' after Stephanie's body was discovered and the rest of the family grieved."

In truth, they needed a suspect fast, and Michael was the most convenient.

They thought he reacted wrongly to the death (not displaying enough emotion! which is dumb because everybody will react differently) and they honed in on the violent games (which weren't that violent IMO compared to what else is out there, and hard to find teenagers playing games without some violence). That plus yes, for a murder of a nice young girl they probably wanted a suspect fast.

I think the police was looking for a scrapegoat and the boy was the perfect scrapegoat to use.

The tagline says it all: "The Police Were Not Looking For The Truth ... Just A Confession"

Pretty much boils down to "didn't show enough emotion" and "zomg 'violent' video games." Also, all the doors were locked. You know, except the one that wasn't locked. Dumb *beep*
