No....I wouldn't say that. I'm no GTA fan...but Vice City was great. I'm baffled how anyone could get bored playing that game. There were some crappy missions, but every game has that, including Getaway. But Vice has the music, FAR SUPERIOR Car handling and a lot more weapons to boot. I spent so much time not even doing missions...just driving around and playing Vigilante...which I've become addicted to. The others, like Taxi and Ambulance were fun to play around with as well. You can't do that with Getaway, cuz Free Roam is dreadfully boring. There's nothing to do.
Obviously Sony agrees, cuz I notice similar things were added to Black Monday, like racing and taxi driver.
What Getaway DOES excel at, is the graphics dept..and VA. Serously...they put our Voice Actors to shame. Best I ever heard in a game. The story was quite gripping as well. I really felt for Mark and what he was forced to do. Who wouldn't, when worried that refusal would cost your child's life. It was superbly done. It's a shame that they didn't excel so much in the GAMEPLAY dept. The game would've kicked a lot more ass, if they did. I didn't mind the health thing...but no map and relying on turn signals was friggin dumb! If your taillights got smashed..you were screwed and most likely would end up failing the mission and have to start over, cuz you'd have just seconds to get another vehicle. The car handling was stiff and frustrating, coming to a crawl for everything you hit, including the idiotic pedestrians who would run into the street, in front of your car!
But I loved the story and the characters. All well done. Playing as Nick was a nice, Resident Evil kind of touch. I like getting the other side of the story, to see what happened before both chars interact. I was disappointed that they weren't in the sequel. I have to say, this was the one game, that made me feel like I was playing a movie. It was nice to play an Adult themed game, that wasn't forced or corny. The language gave it a realistic, gritty feel. I love the accents, so it definitely helped to make it more enjoyable. I also hate rap, so being able to shoot the record player, to make the damn music stop, was a damn funny nice touch. I wish they did more stuff like that.
It was nice to see Sony correct a lot of gameplay mistakes for the Getaway 2, making it better, but the story or chars weren't as interesting. Still...I own both games and definitely enjoy them.... save a level here and there. Can't wait for the next installment.
