I have some questions.

Kitano films always make me feel like a total moron, because I always end up with questions I know I'm not supposed to have. In this case, I'm unclear as to the cause of the death of the blind music fan. I assume he killed himself because he got what he wanted most out of life, but I've heard conflicting things and now I'm not so sure that he committed suicide. Can anyone help me?

Haha, don't. Kitano's films are made that way. Personally I think that makes the film more enjoyable, because you really have to pay attention to not miss to much. Moreover, I also think it makes rewatching them more fun.

He is killed by his rival fan, because he was the only one she (the popsinger) wanted to see. This is just an act of jealousy.

Killed by his rival fan?

Please, can you give me some evidence to back that up? I'm not doubting you; in fact, I tend to agree. But this is the first time I have heard of this. I always assumed that he was struck by a random motorist. (Maybe that hilarious scene from Kikujiro is too fresh in my head.)

I honestly came to the same conclusion that he was killed by the other crazed fan. The only thing that led me to think that is remembering the looks they gave each other as the not yet blinded fan gave a note to the woman at the singer's house. Also, considering the fact that they were both crazed fans and obsession and jealousy can lead to very dangerous results.

reply

Yah, that's true. And there's also the foreshadowing when the popstar's manager says something like "Watch out for those groupies. They can be dangerous." Hmmm... I'll have to watch it again.

reply

I thought he was run over too. But someone else mentioned the rival fan was walking down the same road moments before he died.

reply

I agree with Katagiri, I rewatched the movie the other night, without knowing how the fan had died, then after I was done watching it, I realized that he was most likely killed by his rival fan. They didn't add the rival thing in there just because. I'm pretty sure he was the one who killed the blind fan...

I died then I thought of you and came back to life.
How can you think if you're dead?

reply

I think I agree more with your explanation about the reason he was killed. It seems a normal explanation to me that he blinded himself in order to get what he wanted, but after this the fact that he was blind was too much for him to handle and so he commited suicide (having accomplished his dream, to meet with his idol). A problem with the other interpretation is the fact that we don't see the other fan watching their meeting. So how do we know for sure that this is the reason he was killed? We can't know for sure. We have to assume this. It's a possible senario but not the only one.

reply

I believe he was killed by the rival crazed fan. Otherwise, there would be no reason to even introduce the other fan. Do you know what I mean?

Having read this thread after watching Dolls again last night, I'd like to say that I too have always felt that the other crazed fan, Aoki-san I think, killed Nukui the blind crazed fan. I only say this because during one brief scene we see Mr. Aoki, walking along the road. Then later on when we see that Nukui has been killed, I don't know, the look of the road the cops are washing Nukui's blood from always looked very similair to the road which Aoki was traveling. To me anyway. I'm thinking when we see Aoki walking along the road he had just got finished murdering Nukui. That's just my opinion though.

*On a side note, it sure is a breath of fresh air to be apart of a thread discussion which is being run by trolls bashing everyone's comments/opinions. We get too much of that here on IMDB. Fin.

When I was watching Dolls tonight, I wondered about the blind fan's death scene, too. Wasn't he the guy working near the traffic cones, but was berated by his boss for paying too much attention to the marquee sign and not to the traffic that he was supposed to be waving through the barriers? I thought that perhaps he wasn't paying attention to the traffic that night when he was walking back after his visit (i.e. listening for cars) and his carelessness cost him his life this time.

But the crazed fan murdering him is also possible - a hit and run?

reply

Well we know that Nukui and Mr. Aoki were indeed the top fans of the pop singer. Also there was that bit when Nukui even went to visit her after her accident and her manager I believe said something along the lines of "She doesn't want to see anyone, Mr. Aoki even showed up earlier, but she didn't want to see him." Although we don't know it, I believe that Aoki was still at that location, just watching, hoping to catch a glimpse of the pop-singer (don't remember her name...sorry.) and he happened to see that Nukui was allowed to visit her. That event had to trigger jealousy in full force, causing the death of Nukui.

I agree with Southside Sunset's explanation.

I just saw the movie and looked closely at the blind /dead guy lying in the street. His head was bashed in, from the back side of his head. He couldn't commit suicide by doing this. Pretty much impossible. I think the other "Greatest Fan" did him in, cause he was jealous that he didn't get to visit with the pop star.....after all, he had the same flowers, waited in the rain, and yet was denied access to her.

The victim's Blind/ Seeing Eye Cane was also broken in two pieces. One part was near his hand and the other was across his left side.....aluding the the fact that this was probably his cause of death/ murder weapon, used by the jealous fan who didn't get to see her.

I guess now he really is her biggest fan, living....anyway.

i think he was killed by a passing car

that would fit better with the fact that he used to be a traffic guide, who left his guiding function to go mentally and physically blind and get killed in the same traffic that he once guided

we see him stagger along the road close to the car lane, implying danger

3 theories

1- Suicide:
Why it can be a good theory:After achieving his greatest dream he have nothing greater for him in life.
Why not: To be with that girl he blind himself, now he is with the women of his dream and kill himself, doesn't make sense.

2-Kill by Aoki
Why it can be a good theory: Fit with the theory that greatest fan are dangerous, the rivalry between the 2 make no doubt.

3- Kill my a random car
Why it can be a good theory: He didn't pay attention to car as a traffic guide. Now blind... he don't pay more attention. Also when they washed the blood we see him as a traffic guide.

I don't buy theory #1. Theory #2 or #3 seem both plausible and fit in the spirit of the movie. I prefer #2, but who knows.

Is it just myself who noticed what appears to be an exit wound near the blind man's right shoulder blade?
