What was going on with the story about the young walking couple?

Okay, you all are probably gonna kill me for asking this, but I started watching it when it was already a half hour into the movie. Because of this, I didn't understand why that guy's wife was not all there. I started at the part where she wanted to buy toys. So, what happened to her? And what did the guy do to make him so guilty? I was confused throughout the entire movie about those two. The rest I managed to understand but this story I couldn't.

Sorry maldita, but have you already watched the entire movie?
It is more difficult since Kitano uses a lot the flash back technique, but she was brain damaged after a suicide attempt because his boyriend rejected her to marry with the daughter of the President of the company.
And, apart of this, does anybody understand the symbolism of the masks in her dream? And the rapists?

Oh, brain damage. I see. And her reason explains his guilt. Thanks for that. Oh and no, I haven't had the chance to watch it entirely. I only caught it on the Sundance Channel.

It's not too clear that it's brain damage is it? I dont speak Japanese but the subs made it kind of ambiguous whether it was brain damage from some sort of blood loss involved or whether she just lost her mind. Now that I think of it the way she acted did jibe more with brain damage. She didn't act like a crazy woman just more as a very young child.

i feel like the scene with the rapists was a scene about lost memories. what i mean in that is memories of good times she had. i think the rapists were trying to steal the good memories away, but as that was going on Matsumoto was there by her side while she slept and he put the towel on her forehead. this helped her to hold onto the very little reality she had left in her mind. personally, i think the masks and rapists are possibly one in the same (bad memories/hurt) of how Matsumoto left her for that other girl. and so in her dream the bad memories/hurt was trying to rape(kill) the good memories/joy. i really love this movie a lot.

i was thinking the rape scene was about her being raped in the mental institution.

as far as the question of braindamage goes, she ate a ton of pills, so that is almost definately the cause, at least thats how i interpreted it

I don't think it was brain damage. I think she is just withdrawn due to emotional trauma.

I think that the "rapists" imagined the Yakuza-members, who symbolize the reason that her boyfriend left her, because he was ordered to marry the daughter of a Yakuza boss.

It wasn't a Yakuza boss, It was just the president of a Company. Well... I don't understand Japanese but the subtitles said so. LOL
