watched it without subtitles

wow. this is weird. I just downloaded this movie but it had no subtitles. I'm only in 3rd year Japanese class, so I got the basics of it all, but I wonder what was lost in translation to most people. the only thing I didn't get entirely is WHY the girl is autistic like that to begin with. did she overdose or what?
