I'd like to say. I loved this film.

It was just so chill and beautiful. The visuals were so nice and the
movie did not bore me at all. I thought it was done perfectly. I even
like it more then some kim ki-duk films. The ending was good. The movie
never got too disturbing or sad. It's just the type i move i enjoy. But
this is all just my opinion

Nice opinion :)

I would agree. Beat Takashi is a wonderful artist. he takes us to different places each time. Always a surprise.

I agree, it's quite haunting due to how visually striking the film is. The Bunraku parts really made this film for me though, they were so beautiful to watch.

Houston, we have a hippo.

I agree, Dolls is a very nice film. Good acting, great story and it probably appealed to me so much more because I thought the atmosphere to be really calm and I really like slow films with beautiful visuals like this one. Plus, the music was enchanting!

i don't know why, i just didn't really like this film. I'm a massive takeshi fan, Hana Bi is one of my favourite films and have never disliked one of his films before. I just found it art for art's sake and couldn't get attached to it at all. the bit when the rope breaks just made me laugh, it was so overly dramatic. Might be because of my company when I watched it, i was with a friend who was equally over the top and a bit of a twat and maybe he ruined it for me...

neig_1, I respect you for not enjoying this movie. But the main reason is your friend who obviously does not enjoy these kind of movies. That's why he might have ruined it, as you said..
I think Dolls was really great, maybe stories weren't "wow, very creative" and such, but usage of art was totally sorrowful and great. I was in love with colors mostly..

reply

I loved this film as well. specially sawako's acting was fabulous.

reply

My favorite movie, I agree with everything.

I never tire of watching this..

reply

Mine, too. The colors were enchanting and Sawako's acting flawless.

To think that I bought this gem for 3 Euros...
People here in Greece just don't know what a good movie is.

I've also enjoyed Dolls. Quite an experience! It reminded me for some moments Kieslowski's "The Double Life of Véronique". You know, the people seen as puppets driven unconsciously by a fatalist fate that is unavoidable.

This film it's deeply human and poetic, For some people "Dolls" might feel quite slow and dull (especially for those accustomed to summer blockbusters), but if you are patient enough and enjoys to be enchanted by the magic of traditions and ageless tales of love and lost, then this is a movie for YOU.

The best from Kitano alongside with Kikujiro.

9/10
