maggots

this was a pretty drab film although i enjoyed all of the maggot cinematography. The close ups of the squirming bugs were very good.

Later on in the movie they seemed to add "fly" sounds when people were in the crawl space, but I don't recall them actually showing any. What was odd was that the number of maggots they showed would have meant a really large fly population as well, and I don't know that the crawlspace was accessable enough to the outside to get that many flies.

I think this movie would have been much more disturbing had they bothered to use actual maggots. What they used in this film were a large variety of meal worm known as super worms in the pet trade that are often used as feeder bugs for lizards and other animals. They are the larval stage of the darkling beetle and mainly eat decayed plant matter. They're used so often in film and television for "gross out" effect because they're cheap and easy to come by. Personally I think it's sloppy effects work on behalf of the "Gacy" filmmakers. Being that you never actually see the dead bodies in the crawl space and only super worms and hissing cockroaches (also plant eaters) you'd think that Gacy stashed a few bags of moldy potatoes down there instead of human bodies.
