With this compelling character and subject, how the hell can you make a movie so very bland, confusing and non committal?

Non committal is the theme for this.
If you are dealing with a horrific human and a horrific plot, commit to it.
You served up a sitcom version of a demonic man.

talk about dancing around the meat of a story. Filmmakers, what were you thinking????
BAD. SAD.
And I am still wanting to know why he did it, and what he did,
The only specific thing throughout was the crawl space stank. That was the theme throughout.
