I don't have any real sources, but it is maybe hinted at. Think about it. Norman comes across as a bit of a pyromaniac - he's often the source of the trouble and usually starts the fires...he seems almost disturbed to have done all this bad stuff at his age. I had the idea afew years ago that something must have happened in his past to make him so connected with fire. And what else other than losing a loved parent at a young age, before he could comprehend it? Maybe Dillys didn't explain what had happened to his dad properly to Norman and so he couldn't deal with it, leaving him with all the jumbled memories of this unknown fire for him to not understand. So he dealt with his fire problem the only way he could - by creating it, as we see in most of the episodes.
Wow...I need to get a life. Maybe it's because it's a Sunday.
