Am I the only one who preferred this over the first?

I remember when viewing the first XXX on DVD, I thought it was garbage and watched it again many years later and had the same feelings.

XXX is way too long. While I've grown to appreciate Vin Diesel in the right roles (the Pitch Black films, Boiler Room, Saving Private Ryan and the Fast & Furious sequels), his performance in this film acts as a checklist of all of his worst aspects as a performer. Xander Cage also tends to come across as an arrogant douchebag than someone we should be rooting for. The romance between him and Asia Argento never clicks and the film just feels horribly dated with the EXTREME stunts in every scene and the cheesy nu-metal soundtrack (complete with a Rammstein cameo!).

I certainly won't defend State of the Union as a great film, but I find it to be a more entertaining experience. Ice Cube and Willem Dafoe are more engaging as the hero and villain than Diesel and Generic East European Badguy from the original. Unlike the attempts at humor in XXX, some of the attempts here actually worked for me like Cube gobbling down some burgers while exclaiming Who's Your Daddy? and the banter between Cube and Samuel L. Jackson.

You are not the only one. I thought this was a great film and was thoroughly entertained. Even the stakes of the film were great. Just a better story overall.

reply

Same here. Didn't enjoy the first at all. This one was entertaining.

I first caught this film while flipping channels on TV years back and I was hooked and kept watching! Then when rewatching it in its entirety years later, it still held up. The first film feels very dated just like the original poster mentioned

👍👍

I hated both.

Whats the best action spy film? Ones you like?

reply

The Flint movies with James Coburn and the Matt Helm movies with Dean Martin from the 60s.

I watch most spy films, but those were the last ones I really enjoyed.

Though the Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) was pretty good. Sequels weren’t.

I also love the Bond themes, but overall it’s an underwhelming franchise. Same with Mission Impossible.

reply

The sequel to Kingsman was disturbing and I didnt care for it either.

Did you like the show Burn Notice?

reply

Loved that show! But it was more of an A Team type series than a spy show.

reply

I can see what you mean, the ensemble felt indestructible at times.

reply

Wrongfully accused character out to help people who need it. Though spy stuff was involved.

reply

Thats the same premise, I didnt make that connection at first xD
