If you're a Cute Guy, Suicide is Funny and Playful

Sleep with your dying brother's wife.

Only a cute guy could do that in a film and still be loved.

(Good movie, not a great one)

Agreed. They gave us no good reason to feel sorry for Wilbur. His suicide attempts came across as stupid, childish, attention seeking behaviour.

The whole suicide as a running gag thing was distasteful to say the least.

CathyE, thank you for your post. Ditto.

Totally true, Wilbur really acts horribly, and does nothing to deserve the enormous, ridiculous amount of love he receives, and it's a bit distracting. But then you could just say that's life. Some people get what they deserve, some get more, some get less, there's really no order to it.

Not only his personality, specifically his attitude towards suicide was too detached and relaxed. Granted he had had many attempts, but that is not something you joke about!
Maybe his suicides weren't meant to succeed at all, maybe he was only demonstrating his father and brother how sorry he was and implicitly wanted their forgiveness.
Either way, I don't know whether this attitude was poorly written or poorly played, but it is borderline offensive.

Still be loved by who? the viewers? I've heard more people bashing him and hating his guts than i have of people loving him.
