This movie is all visuals and style ... intentionally

It kills me that Joseph Kahn is so under-appreciated outside of the ad industry. The guy makes these funny, amazing hyper-kinetic, intricately filmed and choreographed live-action cartoons and people criticise them for either too simple or (as with Detention) overly complex plotting.

I wish there was more of an audience for his films :(

Well his latest, a short based on the Power Rangers, is getting all kinds of attention and a lot of people liked it enough to keep spreading it across the internet, maybe its a sign of potentially better things to come for Kahn and his career? And, maybe, his other works will find a cult audience somewhere down the road, too?

Beyond the cliche complaints about "popcorn movie, lack of plot, etc etc." A movie of any genre needs interesting/memorable, if not relatable, characters to really succeed. The lame dialogue and characters are a major flaw of this movie, in my eyes. I can excuse a weak plot in a pure action movie if the characters are memorable, but this movie just fails on every level for me, personally... and I get it, these are subjective things. Some people will find this super entertaining and fun. More power to them... I completely get why the rating is so low, though.

For what it's worth, I am interested in checking out Detention and won't write off Kahn just because this movie was not for me.
