Available on DVD anywhere?

Is there someone out there who knows whether this terrific movie (I'm currently watching it for the 6th or 7th time) has been released on DVD anywhere?

It's about time!

reply

For the 6th or 7th time!? On TV? It is the first time I've heard of it, great film. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the DVD.

reply

Well, I saw it twice in a theater, at least three times on VHS (don't ask me where I got the cassette) and two more times on TV.

I love "Sophiiiie!"! The movie as a whole as well as Katharina Schüttler as an actress. What an amazing performance...

DVD please!!!

reply

I saw it at Cinequest film festival in 2003. I loved it too.

I also would snap it up on DVD if I could (I need English subtitles, though.) I tried to send off some emails to various contacts mentioned for the film, but never got a reply. I keep checking from time to time.

I've never seen it on tv here in the USA. I assume you are in Europe somewhere?

reply

Yep, I'm from Germany. Just like you I already sent out several e-mails to all kinds of people (production company, DVD-labels,...) bot none of them actually was very cooperative. Sad!

Nowadays every piece of crap gets released on DVD but somehow everyone seems to overlook a little masterpiece like "Sophiiiie!".

I'm still hoping, though, that at some point a small American independent label like Wellspring or Tla picks it up und puts it on DVD. That'd be so great!

reply

Sadly, the film did so badly at the German box office, that the DVD release was shelved (there was one planned, and even some Making Of footage shot for that purpose).
I'm the DP, and very glad to see that this film has such enthusiastic fans (the reception was always a lot better abroad than it was in Germany). It's a shame the production company couldn't find the time to reply to the requests mentioned in this thread. If anyone is still interested in a DVD (I have one pulled from the Beta SP Master, but I don't know if I'm authorised to pass on copies) let me know, maybe I can help...

reply

Wow, that would be so great!

Do you know if there are still chances for an official DVD-release and which label would it come from?

PS: Da Du somit vermutlich Deutscher bist könnten wir das ja eigentlich auch auf deutsch handhaben.

:-)

reply

British, actually, but have lived in Germany for a loooong time.

Chances of a DVD release? About a hair's breadth from zero, I'd say. But send your address to [email protected] and once I've cleared it with the producer, I'll gladly send you a copy of my DVD.

Newsflash:

"Sophiiiie!" is scheduled to be released in January by the small German label Epix. Ironically I suggested it to them like 2 years ago...

They usually provide optional English subtitles for their releases of native productions so the non-German fellas out there can feel free to put it on their wishlest as well.

HALLELUJAH!!!

I have it my hands right now :D

\o/ Lasst die Sektkorken knallen!

reply

Lucky you! I'll have to wait a couple more days...

reply

Halleluja, somebody has finally seen the light of day. I just taped it of TV yesterday, because I had lost my copy some two years ago.
This is not just one of the best German films of the past ten years but imho one of the best films ever. And Katharina Schüttler is a revelation!

Yea, I saw it in the store. I actually couldn't believe it and had to look again and again. ;)

This is just great. Is the Making-Of Footage on it?

I will definitely purchase it very soon. :)

reply

I think there is some behind the scenes footage, yeah.
