I DID NOT like it

I'm not a troll, but I'm surprised so many people loved this film so.
I actually found it really unpleasant, not touching or affecting in any way. Tobey Maguire's character wasn't even likable!

Great performances, though. A 2/4 from me.

I think that Tobey is very likable in this movie. If you did not like this version of Red Pollard you should read the book and find out about the real Red, because they really dressed him up in the movie.

reply

Exactly, I liked that it didn't follow most of the typical hollywood conventions.

reply

I thought the story was rather lukewarm and probably most interesting to horse and horse racing lovers. Didn't do anything for me.

reply

I didn't like it either and I was in it!

reply

The movie wasn't done too well, but I really liked the story and how it ties into the depression....Inspiring....and I'm against horse racing(anything that involves abuse)

None of you are trolls, you are good persons stating your minds.
I believe this film has it´s flaws. Sadly, because the story is so exciting, and should have been told better. It´s not a bad film alltogether, but gets a bit too cheesy and feelgood in the end. Jeff Bridges also gets a few moments of speech that is over the top. I don´t know the history, so maybe the person in real life actually said this things. And the words would be great in that setting. Without the background music.

Beautiful animals never the less, wonderful beasts. I simply love to look at horses, don´t you? I love them. I can´t help it, I adore beautiful horses of all race. They are fine and interesting creatures.

I thought it was going to be about a HORSE!! It took at least forty-minutes for the title character to appear and when he did, it was still about the people. I really felt cheated!! For that reason alone, I did not like it.

How can you at least not be touched by Seabiscuit himself? The horse represented something magical to so many of the downtrodden of the times. I thought the film captured this quite well. The slow motion shot through Seabiscuit's plane of vision as he races towards victory is beautifully touching.

Wow...not like Tobey Maquire's portrayal of Red Pollard? (BTW, what does the likability of Peter Parker in Spiderman have to do with the likability of Red Pollard in Seabiscuit?...but I digress...)

Red Pollard had a pretty damned hard life and it's probably a miracle that he did as well as he did...that IS the point. Being Seabiscuit's jockey was the chance of a lifetime for a young guy who was pretty much down and out. The loyalty of the Howards to him during his injuries was unprecidented in that day. The story is about the healing of souls which takes place around this remarkable horse.

The book explains all this so much better.

I didn't like the film too much, either. The inclusion of the David McCullough historical bits were particularly pretentious. But I did like Jeff Bridges and Chris Cooper in their own right.

reply

'Seabiscuit' is good but not great. Chris Cooper, Jeff Bridges and Tobery Maguire delievered solid performances, however the story is too predictable and melodramatic for its own good. Plus IMO it has a low replay value.
Definitively not a bad film but neither as great as some people suggests.

7/10
