TIME PERIOD

Does anybody knows what time period this movie was set ?

The story starts in 1892, in Wyoming. The ending of the story is at the turn of the century, 1900. That is the part where Monte Walsh, on horseback, crosses paths with that corporate accountant ranch director (I don't remember his name), who is now seen driving in an early automobile, with his wife next to him. I think he says something like "Welcome to the 20th century". That was kind of the gist of the ending, that the new century had begun, and the old ways, the cowboy way of life in particular, were on their way out.

it was set in the late 1800's after the civil war.

At the end, where Monte rides back into Harmony, he is wearing what looks to be part of a Spanish American (1898)War uniform (like the Rough Riders), though there is nothing said about his having participated in Cuba. Still, the impression is that he has been away from there for a while, so I guess he could have been returning from the war...okay, it's probably a stretch!

Hey folks,

As previously noted by Eric-1226, the story begins in the early winter months of 1892 with Chet and Monte working the winter range and then coming down to the town to clean up and start summer work. Most of the film is then spent depicting their activities through to the fall of 1893. The story then jumps seven years to 1900 and celebration of the new century. Monte returns to the town and the cemetery to pay his respects to his deceased friends and his onetime love. The scenes from the 1900 visit probably last no more than five minutes of film time, and the story ends there.

Accordingly, the time period covered by the film spans the time from 1892 through part of 1900.

Hollycecilia suggests Monte may have been in the Spanish-American War during the seven year gap, and he seems to base his supposition on his recollection that Monte wore part of an Army uniform during the 1900 scenes. No disrespect intended, but I think Hollycecilia is wrong in this regard. In the 1900 scenes, Monte is wearing pretty much the same type of work clothes he wore throughout the earlier part of the film: chaps, suspenders, plain shirt, and hat - no military garb. When his old foreman, Cal Brennan, asked Monte where he had been the past seven years, Monte indicated he had traveled from Texas to Canada and back while trying to earn a living along the way. No mention was made of the Spanish-American War.

davidwile suggests that hollycecilia is male by the sentence "...he seems to base his supposition on his recollection..."

Holly and Cecilia are names of the female persuasion... (no disrespect intended; I just got a kick out of it)

I still think Monte is wearing part of a uniform, but it's ok to agree to disagree. It's a good movie in any case.

Hey Hollycecilia,

I certainly meant no disrespect to you by my reference to you as a male. I never recognized your screen name as being gender specific; the Holly and Cecilia parts just blew right over my head and left my mind behind.

I should also confess the use of screen names is a bit of a frustration to me. For me, the worst part of using screen names is the lack of civility which all too often is encouraged by the anonymity of the internet. There are countless screen names which truly give no indication of gender, and there are also some folks who use screen names which are the opposite gender of the person using it. As you noted, your screen name is not that way, and if I were a bit sharper in my thinking, I might have noticed it.

In any case, the use of screen names is a frustration for me. Accordingly, I choose to use my real name instead. Of course, it may simply be that I am not clever enough think up a good screen name, or I may just be too lazy to do so. If I were to try using a screen name, maybe I should try Wildman???

Nah, I am simply too old to learn new tricks.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

No disrespect taken, I was merely being facetious.

Wildman sounds pretty cool, actually.

Have a wonderful day, Dave!

With kind regards,
Holly

In the very beginning they give the date as 1892 and the location as Wyoming "territory". Wyoming became a state July 10, 1890.
