'Marigold is a proper Hollywood film'

Tony Tharakan | July 01, 2005 14:21 IST

Aishwarya Rai may be making waves abroad but when it comes to starring in a mainstream Hollywood flick, her ex-boyfriend Salman Khan has pipped her to the post.

Shooting for American filmmaker Willard Carroll's Marigold, billed the first Indo-US co-production ever, is complete and the film is slated for a January 2006 US release.

But lead actor Salman is happy doing Hindi films and has no plans to shift base to the world's movie capital.

"I did this film for Willard and Willard alone. I am not doing any other Hollywood film," he says.

Salman's present stance might change depending on the film's performance at the US box-office, but emoting in English might have had something to do with his decision.

"We do speak English in real life, but to do that consistently in front of the camera on sync sound was challenging," he says.

Marigold is a romantic comedy about American actress Marigold Lexton (Ali Larter), who gets stranded in Mumbai.

The reel adventure begins when she bags a small role in a Bollywood musical and meets Prem (Salman Khan), the film's choreographer.

"It's about a woman who comes to India, has some issues and undergoes a transformation for which Bollywood is a sort of catalyst," explains director Carroll, known for his Sean Connery and Angelina Jolie starrer, Playing By Heart.

"Marigold was my way of bridging the gap between Indian and American cinema. My assumption is that people in America don't know what Bollywood is. In Marigold, they'll be seeing it through an American's eyes," he says.

On a visit to Chennai three years ago, a chance viewing of the Salman-starrer Chori Chori Chupke Chupke introduced the US filmmaker to the magical world of Bollywood.

Mesmerised, Carroll bought around 150 DVDs of Hindi films and spent hours watching them. Friends and family members thought he was 'insane.'

"I returned to the US and made people, in groups of 20, watch films like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Dil Chahta Hai and Hum Saath Saath Hain at my home. At that time, I had a vague idea of doing a movie," he says, adding that the movie was specifically written with Salman Khan in mind.

"I was obsessed with the idea of introducing Bollywood to a wider audience. Indian films are big hits in the US, but mainly among NRIs," says Carroll.

But hasn't filmmaker Gurinder Chadha already succeeded in popularising desi films abroad with the Aishwarya-Rai starrer Bride And Prejudice? "Bride and Prejudice is a sort of Bollywood movie in English. But Marigold was always a proper Hollywood film, which uses Bollywood as a backdrop," says Carroll. "I want the film to kindle all those emotions in American audiences that Bollywood films had done to me."

For Ali Larter, better known for her roles in Final Destination and Legally Blonde, working in Marigold turned out to be a bit of a challenge.

"The dancing was really hard. It involved a lot more work than I had thought. But Salman made it fun for me," says the blonde actress.

Salman agrees. "Although she hated me at first, we got along well later on," he says.

Marigold was shot in the beautiful locales of Rajasthan, Mumbai and Goa. At just 10 minutes short of two hours, the film even has seven songs, composed by musical trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, and written by Javed Akhtar.

But the director denies that the songs hamper the film's storyline. "Bollywood elements have been heightened but they are realistic, they never go over-the-top," says Carroll.

firstly bride and prejudice ran for 15 weeks in the us. check out boxofficemojo for details. thirdly, according to chadha the total gross worldwide is 50 million dollars which is not a flop from any stretch of the imagination.
lastly, if u have seen the promos of marigold on ndtv u would see what terrible production values this movie has. in fact for one awfully composed song, ali and salman are dancing infront of a green cardboard wall. i am willing to bet that this wont even make 10 million in its worldwide gross.
2006- The year of ASH

I really hope Marigold is not so much a 'bigger' picture than Bride and Prejudice but a better one. Bride and Prejudice was beyond embarassing.

The way I see it the student is trying to become the teacher...
I saw Ash's close up at some award function so while SK was doing his thing, she had the look of love in her eyes. She has residual feelings for him...I bet the others do to. Katarina seems self-aware atleast. Ash is a great actress off the set SK-VO-and now who??? But hey its her private life she will only discuss it when it hinders her climb to what? It is important as a public figure to atleast acknowledge your man/woman. Admitting to a failed relationship does reflect bad character...that is outdated thinking.
Maybe Ash's dharma is to be a pioneer...or maybe she needs to find out who the real Ash is instead of rehearsing everything from her interview to her poses. who is at fault with that she has too many people telling her what do do.
I love the pout though makes me want to get collagen lip injections BUT then I do not want to lose my own look. The Ash look is the zegiest of the times... I respect her I am sure she has her own reasons but it is high time to let go and smile and laugh more. Her fans want her to be happy and they will still love her even if she talks about heartbreak because she is not 20 anymore. I do not like the lightening cream ads I find those offensive. How much money does she need. Why did she not go to university abroad with the winnings of Miss World. Marie Claire even did an article about how they are prepped and trained to become miss worlds...and how plastic surgery is free for finalists. I find it strange that in a concert in 1999 they re-created the Miss World event. Oprah, Halle Berry, even Maria Menudos were all beauty queens but no one talks about it. You do not need to forget about good/bad events but one needs to evolve and trust in God. Pageantry is supposed to be about being yourself and winning based on what you are and what you could be. This comment is not intended to be critical of Ashwarya Rai. She is the classic indian beauty with all the good values most parents would be proud of...but lets leave her alone. She should also take a vacation (only with her security guards) and discover what she in from within. The Media hyped her and now that she is finding success outside the indian subcontinent there is criticism from the media. There is no war, not from SK's end he atleast admitting to his feelings, which means he is sensitive to others need. We can be proud of Ash because she has made people appreciate Indian beauty but lets face it there is only once Ashwarya. Someday she will think of SK.

MARIGOLD obviously will be BIGGER than BRIDE & PREJUDICE since Salman Khan is very very popular. Ash is GOOD but Salman is BETTER. I am acquiring MARIGOLD for my native Bangladesh and we are paying a lot more than what was paid for BRIDE & PREJUDICE to be released in Bangladesh. So far I know, MARIGOLD has 8 songs, which have lovely music and been beautifully picturized and there are already enormous interests for the movie.

No it's not even on the same level. Main problem though is it had a very, very limited release. Even in the Indian theaters it was not wide. So hardly any mainstream people will see it in the first place. Anyways the crossover thing really hasn't worked for Ash.

I think if this film had been given a wider release in the UK, US and India then it might have made more of an impact. The problem is that it's now available on DVD (bootleg copy) in a dubbed Hindi version, which really ruins the film (in my opinion anyway).

I guess we'll all just have to wait for the official DVD release (no idea when that will be!)
