What was the point of....

Was Clifton Collins Jr's (Buddy's) part supposed to be like a positive influence on the family?? I mean he eventually was the one to give the family the final push they needed to move on from their lives. In a way, he set them all free from their specific demons. Now... that sounds all good an whatnot, but were these his intentions?? From the scene where he catch a glimpse of him bribing an officer to when he shaves the brother, I guess I'm just confused at what his character's motive.

Why don't you just watch and enjoy the movie instead of thinking about motives and crap like that? Who cares???

I did enjoy the movie. But since I have a brain and can think for myself, I would like to futher enrich my understanding of this movie and all movies... which is something I believe most people do. So unless you are the type that just sits there and lets the light from the movie passively flow to the rods and cones of your eyes with no brain stimulus following, you can either help answer my question or why bother posting?

I didn't see a point in certain things this character did. Usually directors and writers try to make movies with characters and scenes that, OMG, are relevant to the story. If you don't care about that, I suggest you buy some nifty new batteries for your tv remote and just press the channel up button every few minutes when a good story comes up.

I agree. Just sitting there and watching a movie is boring. I don't think there's anything better than looking for explanations, raising questions, finding sub-plot, etc. The most ridiculous answer I have ever heard in my 26 1/2 years on this Earth is "it's only a movie". Wow, are you serious??? Like I had no idea it was a movie.

As for your question, I have actually been wanting to see this movie for like the past three years and finally got to earlier today. I didn't really think of Buddys' character than anything other than an inmate who seemed to push everyone's buttons at the right time. He seemed to be a good friend of Big John Grubb in the pen, so maybe he did have intentions on helping the family find their purpose and what they should be doing. I'll definitely be seeing this one again.

I can't believe people take those expiration dates so seriously

I thought it was some kind of revenge. Big John seemed to have been a bully and I think he might have pushed some wrong buttons.
