Mitch was definitely psychotic, but Julianne also appeared to be a little mentally unbalanced. It was clear rather early that Mitch had no intention to allow her to leave the island. However, she hit his head with a bottle long before he actually turned violent. I won't blame her for trying to escape, but using an animal trap on her own husband and then leaving him alone with a gun to shoot himself definitely appeared rather extreme.
