Great film but defamation of Germans is ridiculous!

I really liked this film until they portrayed the Germans in trucks passing by the Italians and yelling at them that they would die.

Absolutely unhistorical and ridiculous.
Afrika Korps and Italian Army had great comradeship and Rommel praised the Italian soldiers enormously (although he did criticize their officers).

There are numerous testimonies showing that the Germans and Italians fought together as brothers in Arms.

I truly wonder why the director tries to defame Germans. Why is there that un-historical need to do so?

well there were occasional instances where tempers between them flared up. i have read of an instance where two italian soldiers who distinguished themselves were to be personally awardened the iron cross by general georg stumme, but they were so hostile towards the germans that they refused until their commanding officer ordered them to accept the medal. needless to say, stumme was quite upset. and at the end of the second battle of el alamein some italians (especially the folgore) felt like they had been abandoned by the germans.

i haven't seen this film in a while but i took it to be a warning, not mockery. if he was mocking them he'd have been more gleeful - but it seemed more like he was saying 'nobody gets out of here alive'. in another thread on this board a guy says that the line actually translates to 'here one dies' - which makes sense in this context.

baby can you dig your man?
he's a righteous man.

So this ruined the film for you??? I think you are giving way too much weight to one thing that was said during a desperate retreat. What if that German was crazy as he had seen his brother blown to pieces?

This was the only hint of hostility between the Germans and Italians in the entire film.

There was only one German soldier who yelled at the Italians, and this is absolutely believable. As*holes exist in every country, and with the little success the Italian troops had in WWII (they lost on almost every front) it's very likely that many Germans felt contempt for their Italian comrades - they probably felt they had to carry the can for the Italians' failures. Also, German chauvinism was a thing - this is what National Socialism was all about. "We as a people are better than others".
