I liked it also but I didn't understand some of it.
shareMy understanding was that if you drop to dust, you return to the land of the living, but if you go on, you go on to heaven.
It's a biblical metaphor, really. Adam was formed from the dust of the ground and Eve from Adam's rib (but that's a little inconsequential to the metaphor). So since Adam was formed from dust and we're all Adam's descendants, we're all really just living dust.
The Dust Factory itself (within the context of the movie) could be seen as an analogy of purgatory, only without a gate to hell, only to heaven or back to Earth.
