Why did he live?
Why did he live if he fell? I don't know if I got it wrong but I had understood that those falling from the swing and were made into dust, died... and those who could jump lived.
So why did Ryan live?
I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that nobody died per se. Those who made the jump went on to something else unknown (heaven?) and those who didn't returned to their previous life. This theory explains why Ryan returned to his life, but it doesn't explain why he was really trying to grab the acrobat's hands at all. He had decided he wanted to go home, so it seems to me that the logical (if scarier) action is to just drop.
