Jerry setting Orny up?

Does anyone think Jerry purposefully put a very unlikeable person in his documentary for his own ends. Is that possible, he sees this horrible guy who could be quite big. Then Jerry lets Orny destroy his career by just being himself on camera.

Probably not, Jerry doesn't seem like that kind of guy but just wow, hard to believe somebody could let themselves be so horrible on camera.

Destroy his career? lol he's a fairly successful comedian, im not sure why so many people dislike him on here. I think he's just really passionate about what he does

reply

You're not sure why people seem to dislike him? Did you watch the movie?

"I don't want any Commies in my car. No Christians, either."

reply

Nope. I routinely make comments on the imdb message boards of movies that I haven't seen

reply

Hmmm. A satirical answer to a rhetorical question. I'm not sure who wins that one.

I don't think he wanted to destroy his career but I do think he used Orny to make himself look even better by comparison. He's a good comic but disrespecting Steven Wright made him look like a douche. Btw, I'm a huge Jerry Seinfeld fan.

George Carlin: It's all bullsh-t and it's bad for ya.

I think the idea was to have Jerry, Colin Quinn, George Wallace, Chris Rock all hanging out on one side, as the older veterans who've made it. Then Orny who represents the new wave of promising talent. And the fact that Orny is a total ass is sort of a perfect coincidence.

reply

@anthony_doyle58 I don't think Jerry's intentions were bad, but even if they were, I don't think he would've anticipated anyone in show business being dumb enough to act like a douche on camera.

This is what I think as well. Hard to say though. This film really shows us what the true, great comedians do backstage compared to someone who just wants fame. He had to know Orny was a douche and pathetically desperate to do the film. Did he realize how much of a jerk Orny would be on camera? Wow...I doubt it. Who would deliberately damage their career like that? Granted, Orny's a narcissist who thinks he's a god and does no wrong but still... I really think the complete douchiness was a happy surprise for Seinfeld and his colleagues.

The people you idolize wouldn't like you.

You can tell that Orny has a reputation in the 'comedy scene' for acting like an arrogant douche when he is off-stage - this is mentioned by him and several others in the film. Clearly, Seinfeld and the others involved in the production would have been well aware of this and would have known that they would get this on camera, because they sould have shot god knows what amount of footage, and then all they have to do cherry pick in the editing to produce Orny's 'greatest hits' of douchebaggery. In fairness, if you went through all the footage and picked out Seinfeld's worst moments you could probably make him look like a bit of a douche too. Bit of a mean trick on Orny really.

Seinfeld is absolutely that kind of person, I've met him a few times. He's a complete assh_le who sees less successful people as "lesser" overall, and acts as if he's the sole purveyor of what comedy is despite not having written anything funny in 19 years.

If he decided that Orny (also a jerk) was never going to have a career anyways, Seinfeld would have zero compunction "self-fulfilling" that prophecy if he though he was making a point in the process. He is not a good person. At all.

For all we know, we could have gotten the only 45 minutes of Orny acting like a dick out of an entire year of footage.

I don't think any main figure in this came off well except for George Shapiro. Seinfeld picked a kid he could easily *beep* over to demonstrate a point, the kid got too big for his britches way too quickly.
