Daughter dead?

Ok so, I got confused in the ending of this movie. Did the father kill the daughter that night? Or was she dead a long time before that and theyre just insane? And if it happened that night, why wasn't the mother upset about it? She said in the movie the only reason she stayed with Charles for so long was because of Becky. She obviously loved her....I'm just kind of confused, maybe I'm dumb or I missed something. Anybody care to explain?

According to the DVD commentary the daughter died in the car accident a year earlier, so the images in the film were them being basically...insane. The problem conveying this came in the make-up which made the little girl look like she was freshly murdered, thus making the plotline take on an entirely different spin, hence your conclusion.
