This film says it's based on a true story. The only other cosmetics company I know of that is sold the same way as Mary Kay is Avon. Is Avon the competing company?

No. Beauti Control is a real company. There are many other cosmetic companies other than Mary Kay and Avon that follow the same form of distribution.
