Am I the only one who couldn't stand Kyo?

He's a whiney emo bitch. He complains about everything, and he acts like a total tough guy even though he sucks. Whenever he fights someone, he puts himself on the recieving end of a well-needed ass kicking. The only one he can fight is Momiji, but he's a total wuss.

The Nostalgia Critic describes him the best in the beginning of this video:

I dont like Kyou that much either. He's annoying as hell. And I thought the Kyo/Tohru pairing was way too predictable, and the "love triangle" was unnecesary, imo.

My favorite FuruBa guy is Kakeru Manabe from the manga. My favorite girl characters are from the manga too... Machi and Rin.

THANK YOU! You knew from the first book that they were going to end up together, and Takaya devoted way way way WAY too much time to their relationship. (I mean, maybe it needed more since I didn’t find it believable, but I skim past those chapters now to get to the characters I actually care about.) I don’t know if anyone actually bought the love triangle, but Yuki became much more interesting once it was over, and I thought it was just a stupid way to get people to love one character and hate another. . . . Well, to be fair I DO love one character and hate another, but it’s not because of which one gets to bang Tohru.

Oh, and totally feel you on your favorite characters. I wish the Yuki/Machi/Kakeru relationship (actually, the whole student council in general) could’ve had more screen time instead of the insipid romance.

reply

While I can see why you don't like Kyo, I think he is great! He is so funny and I think it's cute how he likes Tohru but tries to hide it.

reply

ditto

reply

You're not the only one, I didn't like Kyo either. The manga explores his character more and allows you to sympathize with him, but I still never warmed up to Kyo. There were so many fantastic male characters that it was easy to not like him.

reply

I really did find Kyou overrated, yet he was voted #1 character so many times...I guess because fans like his character. It's so typical and overplayed, so it's something they are drawn to.

I don't like him, but I don't hate him. He usually annoys the crap out of me, and he's an idiot, but he's still a very nice guy and I think he and Tooru suit each other very well.

Regardless, a lot of people like the 'tough guy, sensitive side' attitude. He is nothing more than a typical, boring Tsundere character to me.

Maybe it’s stupid and annoying to keep replying to people just to say I agree with them, but who cares? This is a really good point, and I don’t know if I just grew out of the loves-bad-boys phase too early, but someone who shouts and stamps his feet and does that blushy-glare thing isn’t cute, it’s obnoxious. If I was Tohru I wouldn’t stand a second of that crap before I’d dump him for not treating me with respect.

reply

as for him being "a whiney emo bitch" yeah.....try turning into a demon and having your mother commit suicide because of you, as well as being hated and shunned by everyone your entire life. it wouldn't be easy and i doubt anyone would be cheerful and smiley after that.

as for people he fights, yuki is pretty much the only person that constantly beats him, he kicks hatsuharu's butt every time lol

of course you're more than entitled to your opinion, but a better look at the character would probably lessen some of your hatred for him lol i know that if i turned into a cat i'd be ticked, but even more so, if i turned into a demon as well i'd be even more upset....and i'd probably start to lose it after my mother committed suicide because of me...yeah and the whole "after age 18 you'll be locked away for the rest of your life" that doesn't exactly make me want to jump around for joy. i don't blame him for fighting yuki either since the deal was that he'd be kept from being locked up until he died IF he was able to defeat yuki in a fight.....soooo all of that taken into account, along with everyone in my family looking down on me and hating me and blaming me for my mother's death, i think i probably would have ended up even worse than kyo and probably would have just shut down all together

that's not to say he's the best character out there, but what I can't stand is when people call him whiney and emo...there'd be something wrong if he WASN'T this upset

reply

Honestly, the more I looked at him the less I liked him . . . it seems like Takaya kept throwing tragic things at him so we’d feel more sorry for him, and maybe I’m a heartless monster, but I didn’t. Yeah, his life sucked, but there’s a point where you have to grow up and be a functioning adult. Every cast member has a horrible backstory of angst and woe, but he’s the only one who becomes a pouty baby and thinks it’s okay to treat everyone around him like crap. Don’t get me wrong, the stuff about his mom is very sad, and the way Akito treated him sucked, but it seems to me by the fact that Shigure and Momiji clearly like him, Kagura loves him, and Yuki says that he wanted to like Kyo . . . a lot of his misery and isolation seems self-imposed.

reply

Yeah. I mean what does he have to complain about, right? His mother being killed in front of him? His father abusing him. Akito abusing him and putting him in the Cat Room to torture him. Being cursed?

What could Kyo possibly be complain about?

reply

uggh...how can you hate Kyo? i personally find him very funny in a way and he reminds me of how i used to be when i was in middle school: a angsty outsider. I guess i could see where you would find him annoying but he has reason to complain.I'm surprised people don't hate Yuki more as he portrays a "perfect" boy image. Not that i hate him either. So far he's my favorite character.

Did you read the manga? (Genuine question, not an insult.) Because it makes more sense if you read the whole thing; it shows that Yuki acts so sweet and perfect because he’s horribly insecure, and he wants people to like him so he tries everything he can to make them happy. I think Takaya set Yuki up as perfect so she could shut that down, and I prefer that way more than what she did with Kyo: set him up as imperfect and slowly make him more and more “perfect" in the reader’s eyes. Didn’t work for me, but it bugs me that all of Kyo’s “flaws” are supposed to be seen as cute and charming, and none of them really have negative consequences for him.

reply

I think I wrote that when I just started the show. I have seen the entire series and read some of the manga. Now I definitely think that Yukis not perfect anymore he was meant to seem it but was genuinely broken from his hard life

reply

Oh okay! :) Surprised someone would reply . . . kinda thought I was talking to a dead board.

Just happened to check my alerts. Also I hope thr do a remake of this series like the manga. I love Yuki by the way even if I didn't think of him much at first. Did you ever hear the fruits basket radio drama directed by jesuotaku? It had a great VA for Yuki and I think brought in the sarcastic humor that made me like him more then the anime.

reply

I love JO! I’d never seen it because I figured it was just a rehash of the manga . . . is it?

reply

JO wrote the script and it's a adaption of the manga yes but I still think it's cool to listen to.

reply

This is awesome! I don’t think I’ve ever heard a more perfect voice for Yuki (though Kagura’s a little weird), and all the others are top-notch too. Shame it got canceled before they could finish . . . I would’ve loved to hear Kakeru and the rest of the student council in these voices.

reply

First time I read the series I liked Kyo. I remember everyone in my high school was a Kyo fan pretty much. A couple years later I reread the series and I've watched the anime series quite a few times, and I really don't like Kyo that much anymore. I'm definitely a Yuki fan. His character went through just as much abuse as Kyo's, but throughout the series he seemed more mature where Kyo was kind of childish.

Read the manga..

In the manga, you learn that, because he's possessed by the cat spirit, once he's out of school he has to be imprisoned for life in a building and cannot go out or get married or basically have a life.

His character is stereotypical and can be annoying, but, I'd probably be an a$$ to if I wasn't allowed to have a future.
