In the anime it is revealed in that episode that he's angry for being the one where he's destined to die. He explains that everyone was cursed but he carries the bulk of everyone's and is the one who will be punished severely by an early death. And through no one's fault or bidding. Each of them were, so to speak, were randomly picked to live a cursed life. And since, from early on (since birth perhaps), they were revealed as the Zodiac cursed members, and as it's been an ongoing cycle, the expectations of each of these members was always negative.
Imagine being brought into the world where expectations were that you were very unlucky, sad, poor, degenerate, etc. Not even a grown baby but people's attitude was already formed and prejudiced towards these individuals. Without even meaning to be mean, sometimes you can hurt someone by being too careful. In a way Akito had these kinds of reactions. People felt like walking on eggshells around Akito. If you've never been in that position, it's hard for you to really understand. But I can tell you, it can drive you crazy because you feel everyone is hiding things/ experiences from you and aren't honest. To absolutely feel and think that everyone is lying to you for some reason is unpleasant and can make you paranoid.
Plus, since he's cursed with a shortened life, he couldn't really enjoy himself. It's like he wasn't allowed to. He was cursed and therefore he was made to feel cursed. If he was brought up in a different household, with parents who saw differently, he might have been happy. But, since he's been alive, he's been taught and made to feel like blight. A blight soon to die. That was why when Tohru voiced out that everyone feels differently, that they would be saddened if he passed away, he was, in his own way, glad.
Does all this make sense?
At least that's how I see Akito. And he couldn't be helped by the other cursed people. Everyone who has some kind of relation with them were all very prejudiced from the get-go. It had to be someone outside the circle. I.E. you know the saying that mothers will always think beautifully of their children. That's a natural bias. And unless someone unrelated tells them this, they're not going to believe it. This is what Tohru is for the others. An Outsider who makes them all feel welcomed.
In the real world, there are still many prejudices which are hard for some people to get over-with. So, for people to say it's easy... well, it should but then, if that was the case, if it was that easy, most prejudices would not exist in the world today.
Btw - this is all about the anime. The manga is slightly different.
