What is Akito's problem?

I mean, seriously. I'm on episode 21 now, and he's just a horrible, manipulative person! Not only does he deny Hatori his chance at happiness with the woman he loves and physically abuse Yuki when he was still a child (at least, that's the implication I got), he won't even allow Hiro to have a childhood crush on Kisa? I mean, I guess Hiro and Kisa are from the same family, but how closely related are they? They could be second cousins for all we know, with enough distance in relation between them to not be considered taboo.

Really, what is his malfunction?

I never got why they continued to allow him to be so abusive to the people in the family. Yes i know he holds the role of the Jade Emperor which makes him the head of the family, but still the family members should have done something about him.

The girl that Hatori was in love with was also a Sohma. Even Kyo's "Master" was a Sohma. I'm assuming they are all distant cousins or something. The series never does say anything about how exactly they are related, but they don't look very much alike so I'm assuming they aren't that closely related or they would have some similar features.

Well from the Anime I guess Akito was just in want of attention. It seemed like he didn't think anyone would love him, so he MADE them love him and stay with him. He used the head of the family thing to make them do whatever he wanted. He wanted to have power because he was powerless (his fate was set out for him and there was nothing he could do about it). He had no control over his own life so he was controlling of others.

The Manga is a bit different though, so if you havent read that then you should.

The Sohma family is a huge family. Some family members go through their entire lives not even meeting half of their family.

Akito is the embodiment of God from the Zodiac, basically that means that whatever Akito wants to do in the family means that people have to give in; especially the members of the Zodiac.

Akito wanted everyone to be miserable because he's said that he knows he'll die young because of being the core of the curse. He feels mad because he didn't choose this.

In the anime it is revealed in that episode that he's angry for being the one where he's destined to die. He explains that everyone was cursed but he carries the bulk of everyone's and is the one who will be punished severely by an early death. And through no one's fault or bidding. Each of them were, so to speak, were randomly picked to live a cursed life. And since, from early on (since birth perhaps), they were revealed as the Zodiac cursed members, and as it's been an ongoing cycle, the expectations of each of these members was always negative.

Imagine being brought into the world where expectations were that you were very unlucky, sad, poor, degenerate, etc. Not even a grown baby but people's attitude was already formed and prejudiced towards these individuals. Without even meaning to be mean, sometimes you can hurt someone by being too careful. In a way Akito had these kinds of reactions. People felt like walking on eggshells around Akito. If you've never been in that position, it's hard for you to really understand. But I can tell you, it can drive you crazy because you feel everyone is hiding things/ experiences from you and aren't honest. To absolutely feel and think that everyone is lying to you for some reason is unpleasant and can make you paranoid.

Plus, since he's cursed with a shortened life, he couldn't really enjoy himself. It's like he wasn't allowed to. He was cursed and therefore he was made to feel cursed. If he was brought up in a different household, with parents who saw differently, he might have been happy. But, since he's been alive, he's been taught and made to feel like blight. A blight soon to die. That was why when Tohru voiced out that everyone feels differently, that they would be saddened if he passed away, he was, in his own way, glad.

Does all this make sense?

At least that's how I see Akito. And he couldn't be helped by the other cursed people. Everyone who has some kind of relation with them were all very prejudiced from the get-go. It had to be someone outside the circle. I.E. you know the saying that mothers will always think beautifully of their children. That's a natural bias. And unless someone unrelated tells them this, they're not going to believe it. This is what Tohru is for the others. An Outsider who makes them all feel welcomed.

In the real world, there are still many prejudices which are hard for some people to get over-with. So, for people to say it's easy... well, it should but then, if that was the case, if it was that easy, most prejudices would not exist in the world today.

Btw - this is all about the anime. The manga is slightly different.
