So at the end... (spoilers)

Kyung Hee also died? This is very confusing. First they got back together at the wedding, then what happens??

reply

yup...got me to. But the flash back show that both of the girls already sick when they still young and that make them close friend.
Maybe the wedding showed some good time between the Ji-hwan and Kyung Hee.
ironic, to see Ji-hwan receiving the letters of the two girl at the end really clear something...

reply

This film is very strange. What I got from those flashbacks is that Soo-In and Kyung Hee met at the hospital at a young age, one of them is a boy and the other is a girl. They then, for whatever reason, switch names and the boy takes on the identity of a girl (a.k.a transvestite). So, Soo-In and Kyung Hee's livelong secret, is that Kyung Hee is not a girl, but a boy. Soo-In then dies and Kyung Hee's secret remains. Then, Kyung Hee, instead of revealing his true identity, moves away and commits suicide.

After watching and listening closely, that's what I got from it. If I'm wrong, the directing, screenplay or editing of this film was extremely bad for an ending.

hahahahah, that explanation cracks me up.
duno where the suicide bit comes from though..... she just dies coz she started becoming ill again after her best friend died. The girl/boy thing is just coz the other one initially thought she was a boy coz of the bald head from the cancer.

No names, coz can't remember who is who hehe. just watch it again and again until you get it. I think it's structured well.

reply

I think your explanation is bang on.

When I first started watching this movie I thought it was just a girl/boy/girl triangle type of movie but it soon grew into much more than that. I thought it was very poignant, a beautiful testament to love and friendship. The actors played their roles perfectly.

Why can't Hollywood make this kind of movie? It seems almost every movie they put out these days is a sequel or a remake. All style and no substance. And they wonder why movie attendance is down

reply

ok so here's my take on the whole girl boy transvestite thing......

Remember close to the begining when Soo-in asked Kyung Hee what it's like to kiss a boy?, well i believe that that was a clue to tell us she's never had a boyfriend or anything close.

Ji-Hawn asked Soo-in to talk about her first love - note: her first love not her first boyfriend - so she begins talking about when she met Kyung Hee because Kyung Hee is the only love she has had(remeber the "i love you's" at the end). We, as is ji-hawn are led to believe she is talking about a boy but the simple twist is that she was always talking about the girl Kyung Hee. They try to confuse us more by making her bald due to her illness but rest assure Kyung Hee is and always was A girl.

well..... that's what i got from the movie, feel free to correct me if you disagree, that's what i love about Korean Movies.

MMM have we seen the same movie?

they just change names to pretend that the other person is by their side, that doesn't mean she is a he, or whatever "plot" you have invented.

Watch the movie again

pd: both girld die in the end and the movie it's about how they met, the fun they had and how every moment spend together is unereasable

reply

Both girls are ill and died in the end.Ji Hwan was reading the last letter to him from both girls.

reply

LOL! Where did you get that from? She thought Kyung Hee was a boy because the short hair but it became obvious later it was a girl. And she didn't commit suicide. Well the actress who played her in real life committed suicide. But the character died from natural causes. It shows that at the end when you see the blood coming out of her nose as she writes the letter that Ji-Whan is reading. You just didn't pay attention.

Hello! I watched this movie for the first time last night, like so many Korean movies i've stumbled upon they always leave me in a few tears, or thinking just how "real" and touching movies can be.

I have to say like all of you, this movie turned my head for a loop, like where the park where Ji-Hwan sees Kyung-Hee again in that little village, and seems like they're back together. But then it cuts to the post-man...so i'm guessing that maybe he was imagining that part.

Anyway, it's not very clear, but what seems painfully clear, and nobody wants to believe ;0 is that she writes her last letter, and that's how the movie ends.

I really enjoyed this movie, maybe it was a bit confusing at times (like who was that little girl, who liked that boy in the bookstore)...but all the qualities of a romantic/drama came through again.

What's even more sad is the actress who plays Kyung-Hee died i think after this movie? In 2002 after one of her movies, it's so sad.

reply

I am sure that Kyung-Hee didn't die at the end of the movie. The letter was written by Kyung-Hee and was probably supposed to be sent to Ji-Hwan when she dies. Remember, the letter was stolen from Kyung-Hee by the postman. The postman was later heartbroken as seeing Kyung-Hee & Ji-Hwan together and decided to send the letter. That's how it came to Ji-Hwan.

I think the director didn't show Kyung-Hee & Ji-Hwan are happy together cos he didn't want to spoil the trio relationship which he created as the main theme of this movie. It also makes us wonder after seeing it.

It is really sad to know that the actress casting Kyung-Hee died. She has a lovely, innocent face. I like her acting in this movie and "the Brotherhood of War".

Very Good Touching Movie.

Moreover, Su-in's tips for Ji-Hwan to be with Kyung-Hee would become useless if Kyung-Hee died.

I just finishedwatching the movie. I must say it was a bit difficult, I didn't immediately catch the flash-backs.. I also just read the synopsis on wikipedia. It's pretty comprehensive. The two girls are definitely two girls. It's just that at the hospital, Kyung-Hee (not her real name) looked like a boy because of her short hair (when she throws a stone and hits the window). Even if Soo-In said it was her first love.

The only thing I don't understand is how did they go from "Kyung-Hee and Ji-Hwan together at their friend's wedding and taking a photo" to "Ji-Hwan at the end reading a letter from Kyung-Hee who is dying (she's bleeding + the classmate said both were sick"? Did I miss something?

reply

After watching this movie one more time, I think I got what happened at the end. In the letter, Kyung-Hee said "she worried about Ji-Hwan's company test because he came to see her too often and didn't have time to prepare himself". It means she wrote the letter after they met again. The postman wiped his tears and Ji-Hwan wore a black suit. It means Kyung-Hee died finally. It is really bad to know it actually happened

bigtooth81,

That makes sense and I think the tranvestite theory is ridiculous though it would make sense. Kyun-Hee did want to show Son-ni how to kiss. hahah Overall, it was a above average movie--no, I didn't cry or thought of it.

reply

I think both nubafia and bigtooth81 got it right. What seems to confuse many people is the postman scene in the end of the film. Remember, he is the one who approves the letters for delivery, and in that particular scene where he was crying, I think he realises the foolishness of his "love" for Kyeong-hee and as a result, he approves the letter intended for Ji-hwan. I think it was both a comical yet touching scene, albeit confusing yes. The postman sends the letter written by Su-in on her death bed, originally intended for Ji-hwan. From this we can see the jealousy Kyeong-hee had, wanting Ji-hwan for herself. But hey, she is only human.

Oh and it should be note that both Ji-hwan and Kyeong-hee did not get together at the wedding. You can tell because of the awkward feeling between the two, very obvious when they had there photo taken. I think they were there just to savour the old times. It was after all, Ji-hwan's shop owner friend.

Very sad how Kyeong-hee died in the end, but I'm glad the writer took that step. Gives something different than a Hollywood flick. Fantastic movie.

reply

Yes,she died. She came for the wedding and she says in the letter that he visited her. But the last letter he read is after they met again and she died. They show blood coming out of her nose as she is writing the letter. That last scene with the voice over is her writing that letter and she probably died that same night.Ji-Whan is probably reading that letter after attending her funeral.
