Read the book and forget the movie. The book is nonfiction and quite wonderful. Unfortunately, they wrote a whole new plot and turned it into yet another connect-the-dots chick flick.

I love this movie.

I love this movie too. See it often.

I also love this movie, and own it. All my friends like it too. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

The book is pretty good & quite different from the movie, but I got sick of the book near the end. Is that ALL they do is go around to charming little places & buy things? It's hard to read if you're having money troubles. I think I got sick from envy. ;)

I didn't like it at all. It had every cliché, was entirely predictable, and I didn't even get to see the real process of them rehabbing the house, which is the reason I watched in the first place. Diane Lane is a good enough actress, but this was a crummy movie, with a ridiculous "ladybug" ending.

I have to agree, this plays out like a made for TV Lifetime channel movie

The main reason for that (along with the other flaws detailed in other threads) was that after all that, after "your dreams did come true", which would have given it a sense of poetry, they just had to tack on the "Hollywood Ending." Oh, thank God she met "the one" and was saved from a life of misery!

The movie is as about as different from the book as it is possible to be. Mayes is ALREADY with Ed when she goes to Italy. There is no romance, no hunky Italian guy, no gay best friend, no crazy FellinI loving woman, no Paolo and local girl romance, no good looking real estate agent, nothing about her divorcing her husband because he cheated on her. The book is about the love for Italy, the people and a house. Frances Mayes resembles Kathy Bates, not Diane Lane. A wonderful book has been turned in a ridiculous Hollywood fantasy that bears no relationship to Mayes's real life. I have never been more disappointed in a book to movie filming my life.

I agree. I had a friend recommend this movie to me - God knows why - and I hated it. I don't watch chick flicks, especially poorly made ones so I have no idea what possessed her to suggest it to me. Glad I only rented it. Too bad I couldn't burn it. - I am a single female in her forties who is divorced - the exact demographic of this film. It blew.

I gave this movie a try but the story is so bland. Following an emotionally draining divorce a woman (Lane) visits Italy and decides to buy a villa. What follows is a vanilla story that I will not finish watching. I read the synopsis and yawned.

Bland and kind of predictable. A hollow center.

Its that man again!!

I LOVE this movie and I'll tell ya why....it's how Diane portrays the character and is in all her situations! Her wonderful acting and delivery are what make it. Also, I don't look at it as Shakespeare...it is a movie about HOPE.

And on that....BINGO it HITS the mark! I'm in this situation now.
