Faucet at end

Hi. My mom wants to know what the symbolism is for the faucet at the end of the movie.

If anyone knows, please tell me.

I feel the the faucet represented conduit for life.

Like Frances it was (at the beginning) dry and without spirit... and at the end of the story like her it was free flowing/over flowing.

I agree. In the beginning it is so out of place, and as the movie continues, it seems as if it's always just been there. I like the analogy that at first it is dry and not working, and then it overflows....

"I had a farm in Africa..."

Hi donnamartingraduate. In my opinion, the faucet spewing water at the end of the movie is a symbol of baptism and rebirth. The spigot is even in the shape of a shell, another common Christian symbol of baptism. Notice that Francis is wearing a white dress as one who is being baptized. Her old life was dry, not working like the faucet when she first moves into the house. By the end of the movie her life is full of friends and love, her cup runneth over so to speak. She has been reborn into her new, rich life.

Hmmm, in the beginning, the faucet wouldn't run at first. I read somewhere that if you see a running faucet in your dreams, it's a sign of creativity. Since she was a writer, that makes sense to me. Maybe it was a sign of overcoming many challenges, especially her writer's block.

I thought it symbolized the house coming to life again.

They say houses need to be lived in. This house hadn't been lived in in a while. But as time passes, more and more life comes in to the house until it is alive and also part of the "family".

In addition to what others have written....

When she first encountered the spigot she accidentally ran into it and actually bruised her arm. And it wasn't even functional.

But at the end it is producing a fine stream of water.

In a similar way Frances was living a life in San Francisco with a husband who was cheating on her and she was unappreciated as a literary critic. This is like the bruise. But she worked on it and made a new life for herself as Francesca and look how productive what seemed like an obstacle had become.
