Does this mean Katherine was supposed to be Anite Ekberg?

Anita Ekberg played the Blond Bombshell in the Trevi Fountain in La Dolce Vita, which Katherine was play acting in the fountain scene. She said she knew Fellini. Was her character actually supposed to be her?

Somebody needs a happy meal.

That's exactly the reason why I'm browsing this forum.. It seems that Katherine is the "fountain girl" and since the book is based on actual events, I can conclude that the author either really met Anita Ekberg (she lives in Italy) or used her unforgettable role as a symbol of "Italian dream".. Guess we will know soon enough!

Thanks for your reply. I'm surprised no one else seemed to care about that possibility. I'm not sure what you mean by "soon enough", but apparantly the Italian Dream woman is the voluptuous blond bombshell.

Anita Ekberg lives in Italy and weighs about 250 lbs! She has an interview in the special features on the La Dolce Vita DVD.

Did you consider that neither might be true? That the character was created for the movie and never appears in the book? The movie has almost NOTHING in common with the book.

reply

Sorry, never read the book.

I only managed to see some 20 minutes of the film, and not the bit you write about, so I can't judge this, but the following may help you in finding out:

During the 20 minutes I saw, I recognised three or four Fellini items. So, whatever "your" scene may be about, at any rate this flick seems filled to the rim with tidbits from other Fellini (or other Italian) films.
Hope this helps.

I was wondering the same thing myself, which is why I came here. Is she just a crazy woman, who believes she was in the movie, or was she actually in the movie? Guess it's just one of those things...

reply

The impression I got from the film was that Katherine had met Fellini and had danced in the fountain in real life and that had influenced him to put it in his film. So no, she wasn't being Anita Ekberg but Fellini drew from Katherine's real life fountain escapades and put it in his film.

^^^ This was my take too. She said she knew Fellini and I felt that she was the inspiration for the character he created later. When she recreated the famous scene she was just kind of reveling in the fact that she knew she was the inspiration.

She was just a crazy, old broad, and people humored her because of her wealth. She had delusions of grandeur but had a heart of gold. She always thought she was some iconic heroine from a film. I also noticed at the end, during the wedding, she was acting all Scarlett O'Hara, re-enacting the famous barbecue scene in Gone With the Wind, where Scarlett is surrounded by a bevy of admirers.

She's someone who met Fellini and ever afterward indulged fantasies about starring in his movies. Very possibly she was seduced and abandoned. But she was never a star.
