Ok, in this movie, after Gene finds Leper and they're arguing, in a fit of rage Leper screams at Gene something like "None of them liked you! The only friend you had you pushed out of a tree!" Why does he say that? I never got the impression that nobody liked Gene in the movie or the book. Enlighten me!

in the book it's really different, so i'll enlighten you with the book. "This wouldn't have come from the Leper of the beaver dam" is something the narrator (gene) says in the book, meaning Leper had obviously changed since the war. Due to that, he realizes more, and realizes that Gene is savage underneath and pushed Finny out of the tree.
In the book, Gene isn't new to devon, so he'd have known these boys for 3 years now, but idk why they made it that he's a newbie for the summer session.
They never say "none of them liked you" in the book. in the book it's "Did you ever think about me? I thought about myself... it's you we happen to be talking about now, like a savage underneath. Like. like that time you knocked Finny out of the tree."
So in the book Leper never says Gene doesn't have friends.
