A Hack Player

Sakuma said to Peco, "There are things only a hack player knows." Does anybody know what a hack player is?

reply

Hacky-sack maybe? I dunno; havent seen the movie.

reply

i think a hack player is someone who just doesnt have the natural talent that really has to hack it out...

reply

whitmorebrad had it.

He means someone who doesn't have the talent that Peco, Smile, and Dragon ahve

you can tell by the next line when he tells peco that eh has to run till he pukes blood, practice till he pisses blood.

reply

Peco is a "hack player", his style of playing is sort of aggressive, close to the
table, smashing the ball with high speed and a quick spin.
Smile on the other hand is a "chop player", he stands way back from the table,
just "chopping" the ball back with extreme spin. At least ... i think so ;)

reply

Yea sounds right, I cant believe someone said hacky sack. I really want to go play table tennis after seeing this movie. jeez.

reply

yeah its truly a hidden gem

Last Movie I Watched:
Chronicles of Narnia - Andrew Adamson (5/10)

reply

...I cant believe someone said hacky sack.
Maybe it's someone who plays table tennis with a hacky sack?

reply

ive never heard of a "hack" player- there are choppers, but ive never heard of a hack as a type of shot.. i play table tennis quite seriously, so i kinda know what im talking about. That last sentence sounded so lame, excuse me please, just trying to validify my statement.

reply

A hack is someone who is no good at a certain skill. That's why when someone says, "You're a hack!" it is an insult. This is what I believe he meant as a "hack player."

reply

I took it to have a similar meaning to 'Hack writer' and not relating to any particular style of play.
Therefore a 'Hack Player' would be one who can play well but would ultimatly only ever be second rate; even though he knows enough to recognise true talent in others. He could be an excellent club player but could never have the ability to be a success on the international stage like Smile or Peco.
Another similar example from cinema would be 'Amadeus' where without actually using the phrase Salieri would consider himself a 'Hack Composer' when comparing himself to Mozart.

the translator is borrowing the word 'hack' from journalism, in which a 'hack' is a talentless journo who merely trudges out boring uninspired articles as a means to the end of paying for living etc. it also refers to those journos who have no integrity.

in this context it is supposed to infer that sakuma is a hack player, that is to say that he has not got the natural talent of peco or even smile. he is suggesting, in a direct parallel to several other conversations that go on in the film, that his unique position in terms of ability affords him a knowledge that peco does not have - peco is too talented, it comes too easily for him to understand that until he has played his very best, he will only disappoint those who admire him...

hope that makes sense. its got nothing to do with playing technique. i thought it was an unusual use of the word myself, and can only assume the translator was struggling to translate a japanese word for which there is not direct equivalent in english...

yea i think youre exactly right. being a native speaker, i know the most literal translation of what sakuma said would be "there are things that can be only known by birds that can't fly" so as you said its got nothing to do with their playing styles.
