A lot of people who watched the movie rooted for Smile more than Peco, and considered Smile to be the best player.
Throughout the whole movie, I always rooted for Peco, but I'd like to know all your opinions. Who's the best to you?
Peco is obviously better. Peco taught Smile how to play. Peco also beat Smile in the final at the end of the movie. Peco is also the professional pingpong player, not Smile. imo

the only reason peco won was because smile always considered him his hero and he was never interested in the sport.
because peco saved him smile went along with anything peco did so he would be his friend.
so he started table tennis, and always let peco win, nobody likes to see their heroes lose.
also he never wanted to be a pro player so he let peco become one because that was pecos dream.
Peco obviously was the better player. Smile was smiling at the end bc he gave it his all, and he realised Peco really was the better player, which made him happy because he was his hero. If smile didn't care at all, he wouldn't have put so much effort into training.

shareI think Smile is meant to be the better player. He had a natural gift and way more potential than Peco. The thing is that he chose not to beat Peco, because Peco meant everything to him. His future as a ping pong player would be meaningless if he defeated his own hero.

When they were kids, Peco was the better player and taught Smile how to play. The early photo of them together with Peco the Champion and Smile next to him smiling insinuates the only time Smile was happy was when his "hero" was truly at his best. It was also the only time anyone had ever seen Smile "smile".
When he got older, Peco threw away his talents, didn't practice and Smile became the better player on talent alone. This caused Smile to be sad because his hero was no longer the best he could be. Smile no longer smiled because of this feeling his best friend and hero was wasting his opportunity.
After Peco's rebirth and re-dedication to the sport, he beat Kazama, China and Smile to win the tournament and go on to be a world champion. Smile told his coach he was going to play to win and he did. Peco still beat him but this made Smile happy again because his hero was once again the best he could be. Peco was once again his hero and someone he looked up to.
The ending shots of Smile smiling again and Peco entering the world tournament confirm this.
Definetely peco is the better player.. Smile knows it from the start that peco have lot of talent, but peco does'nt care to practise n improve his skills.. In the end peco realises it n he jumps off a bridge into a river as a symbolic rebirth and starts practising hard..
Both smile n dragon who were playin with him since their childhood knew that peco has the talent to play Fly shot, which they both dont have (this can be found from dialogues 'you can fly').. Dragon lost faith in peco but smile dint..

I think they are pretty close to equal. But Peco has a lot of growth potential. He had the natural talent just not the work ethic to go with it. And each match in the last tournament he seemed to be getting better with each match.

But he always looked at ping pong as a fun thing to do with people, so when it finally reverted back to a "fun" game...when Peco and Smile didn't take it seriously, Peco was the better player.
So at the end, Peco is the better player because now as a pro, he is serious AND fun.

I rooted for Peco..he is the Hero. But obviously Smile is the better player. You cannot argue with natural talent :)
