While I think it's overrated at 7.8, I do feel like the movie works as an action/adventure film. The acting was good, especially Dakota Fanning (one of the most impressive child actor performances I've seen). Denzel was good and I felt Scott's directing was also solid
What I did not care for was some of the over-the-top violence. I understand how anti-heroes work but when the savagery is taken to that extreme (putting a bomb in a guy's ass, really?) it becomes a gimmick and for me takes away from the movie. It was also a little awkward transitioning from that to the soulful impassioned crooning which would typically happen 5 seconds after a display of particularly gratuitous brutality, but maybe it's just me.
I think there's enough good in this movie to give it something in the high 6's, maybe round up to 7 if you want a whole number. I felt it could have been something more though, perhaps if some deeper themes were written in. "A bullet always tells the truth" isn't particularly interesting imo, but hey, at the end of the day it's a simple action flick. Take it for what it is and enjoy.
