shareThe movie never fully establishes why he goes for the doll instead of a real woman, because the writing lacks character motivation. It's just supposed to be accepted that he "needs" the doll, so the story can continue. Also, the material on that thing looked pretty damn cheap, and not worth 10 grand...even if he did feel he needed it.
