Also recommended....

While enjoying Love Object, a few other films came to mind and are highly recommended: Pin (1988), May (2002), and of course the classic Psycho (1960). All these are available on DVD. Of course some might mention Magic (1978) and the ventriloquist segment of Dead Of Night (1945), but those involved a ventriloquist dummy instead of a life-size dummy.

this movie also reminded me of Willard.

Did no one else catch flickers of THE COLLECTOR (especially in the guy's inhibited, often virtually mute demeanor) in this movie? I mean, the closing bit is almost a direct lift from that Terence Stamp film as the lead character sets his sights on a new "love object" after losing his first. Oh -- and I thought Lisa was extremely cute and played her part well (don't understand the animosity many have shown to her work in this flick; could it be a girl thing?). Steve.

reply

My roomies and I just caught this on Showtime. *beep* up. It was great.

reply

Didn't take it so much as animosity, she was just having a meltdown from being in the new environment and not getting any help. Women get to freak out at work, men just cry in the car on the way home, lol.

I seriously doubt that someone who looked like Lisa would have had much trouble getting help with whatever she needed, only thing that keeps that from being a plot hole is the paranoia exhibited by Rip Torn's character vis-a-vis sexual harrassment. Possibly that paranoia trickled down to the staff who were afraid any friendliness or helpfulness would get them in a jam. Then again, his boss didn't seem to do more than raise an eyebrown when he walked in on them in a lip lock, go fig.

The "animosity" remark was meant to deal with the strange reaction that many reviewers (amateur and pro) have had towards her performance in the film. I thought she did a fine job, but apparently that opinion isn't shared by all who've seen it. Seems like female reviewers have more negative responses than male ones (I wonder why? Heh-heh-heh . . . .). Steve.

Ah ok, misread the post. Thought they were referring to her little meltdown at work...

I really don't see any similarities between this and Willard. I haven't seen the original Willard, but I thought the remake was excellent and one could find sympathy for his character, but the guy in Love Object wasn't sympathetic at all.

Willard was cheated out of his inheritance, treated badly by the people who took over his father's company and was eventually going to be thrown out of his own house. Even though his accomplices were rats, those are actual living, breathing creatures. In the end, justice of a kind was served.

Furthermore, Willard was fired, while Winslow was given a promotion - sure, Winslow was eventually fired too, but that was his own fault.

Winslow's downfall, OTOH, was of his own doing. Nikki was an inanimate object. The problem was entirely in Winslow's head.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!

In Love Object, it is the innocent victim that is killed and the perverted and evil Winslow that is rewarded.

the reason this movie reminds you of so many other movies.. is because its unorginall

May has been mention. I also recommend Roman and I wanna say Audition, for the fact that the leading girl has an obsessive, twisted personality and needs attention from that 'special' person that they desire for.

reply

Roman was a surprisingly good movie, considering how low the budget was. Angela Bettis did some interesting work with that one, although if I recall it does start pretty slow.

I like to think Cytherea is out there, squirting from her vagina for all of us sinners.

reply

A bit different but I'd also recommend the movie Peacock. That was quite good.
