Wilco

A great, great band... couldn't help but enjoy the movie.

funny, the record label's attempt to snuff out the band's recordings only made me more interested in wilco. a fantastic cd if you haven't checked it out yet.

"...it completely blows my mind and I am saddened at the utter lack of musical taste that the general population has."

Ditto. The way music is marketed today has a lot to do with that though. I had shitty taste in music until one good album snuck into my collection, and that made me more curious. If people are exposed to interesting/original music, no matter how minimally, it will make them seek out more and evolve (taste-wise). At least I hope so.

I blame clear channel :D

it's definitely an epidemic.

Check out Uncle Tupelo if you love Wilco's older stuff. It was Jeff Tweedy's first band and they pretty much created alt-country.

Sorry for wasting a post if y'all knew that already.

Got me a movie, I want you to know! Slicin' up Eyeballs, I want you to know!

Wilco, wonderful band I had a chance to see them live at a festival this summer but they clashed with another band, I really wished I'd seen Wilco instead :(

I havent seen the film yet as its out of stock on Play.com (grr)

Personal distaste for "shitty" music can be considered just as closed-minded as force-feeding yourself only the Top 40. I find many indie music fans to be as superficial and shut off from the world as belated Britney Spears fans. In much smaller quantities, however...

The difference, I think, is to always be open-minded, no matter the form of musical expression, and let the music find you...

Yes, but there's nothing wrong with classifying some music as bad based on your personal standards. Everyone has opinions. That doesn't mean they're correct...it's why they're called opinions.

I agree. I listen to different genres of music. But I still think I can say "toxic" is a shitty song based on the lyics alone without being labeled "close-minded."
"and so, for the sake of momentum..."

Hi, I'm Jo-Jo and I'm a recent convert to Wilco after seeing them on "Austin City Limits": like so many of you on this message board I was just knocked out by them. What a talented bunch of guys. I haven't been this taken with something "new" since Patti Smith. I just want to collect all their albums and read about them and hopefully see them live too if they come to New York. Strangely enough I have an Uncle Tupelo track on a compilation album which I love - I didn't know anything about them either so interesting to realise it was the same singer. Loved the movie too - one of the best portrayals I've seen of any band in a documentary. Wish Patti would do something like this! And for those of you comparing the funniest scenes, check out the DVD extras re: Jeff's favourite word is ****! (Censored it myself because I'm sure the board would!) Cheers, Jo-Jo

reply

you blew it! i saw them in nyc on new year's eve with flaming lips and sleater-kinney... an amazingly sick show.

reply

No I didn't blow anything - I actually started liking them after that date. In fact reading the review of that particular show was one of the things that caught my attention. Tell me Youngdylan since you were lucky enough to be there - was Jeff really wearing an outfit with bunnies on? That's what it looked like in the photo in Rolling Stone. Anyway I probably have blown it now: I doubt my husband will let me go see anyone I have drooled this much over. Just have to content myself with the CDs and the DVD!

reply

yeah, he was wearing like pajamas with bunnies on them, i assume in honor of the fact that the flaming lips have people in bunny costumes on the stage when they play? at coachella he was just wearing a t-shirt i think...

reply

he was wearing pajamas because of the time and also the movie.hit the stage at midnight.Wilco is the beatles of the gen x/y generation please don't dismiss them be cause of their press. They are actually extremely underrated.

reply

Would never dismiss them because of what some people write about them! I am just knocked out by their music. I am still enjoying familiarising myself with their amazing catalogue, then I am going to start on Uncle Tupelo because I am really interested to hear what Jeff was doing before. And do I EVER WISH I could have seen him in the bunny jammies!!
