jay bennett is Scotty from Boogie Nights

remember the character played by phillip seymour hoffman in boogie nights. That's jay bennett in IATTBYH. Looks and sounds just like him...
BTW great movie about a great band
Funniest scene - Jeff gets a phone call from his wife and she starts hassling him about where he is or when he is going to be home. Every guy can relate to that

reply

i have to disagree about the funniest scene...

jay bennett "remember all that blow we bought in amsterdam"

reply

it's even better with the commentary on.

"At least we'd be five guys having fun."

reply

I second the Amsterdam incident being the funniest part of the movie. Jeff Tweedy's face is priceless.

reply

I said the EXACT same thing to my wife when we were watching it. Man, what a creepy guy.

He kind of reminds me of a sheep dog. Talented musician though.

reply

Yeah. He's a rock-solid guitarist. It's clear that he was a leader in his own right, and Wilco's parting ways with him was understandable.

"A circle can't have two centers" seems apt.

Yeah - Phillip S. Hoffman's Scotty character & Jay Bennett are virtually the same person.
Interesting tidbit on that note: left on the cutting room floor is a scene where following the argument (Bennett/Tweedy) in the studio and Jeff Tweedy puking in the restroom...Jay Bennett trails right behind him- opens the stall door and kisses Jeff smack on the lips.
Jeff reacts with stunned horror and berates Jay Bennett. Jay begins sobbing in histrionic fashion and begs Jeff's forgiveness. Jeff accepts Jay's apology. Jay then asks for just a little peck -with no tongue this time.
The parallels between Jay Bennett and Scotty are alarming to say the least.

reply

Then they came out of the bathroom and told the other guys in the band what they had been doing, and everyone was SOOOO jealous.

hohoho... that's brilliant... took me 10 min to make the "merge" connection to BN... you really can imagine it happening though

Jay Bennett "its clear to me now that Jeff was threatened by me"

reply

Am I the only one that thinks he looks the younger (goof-off) brother from American Chopper?

reply

haha he does too, now you mention it he definitely does.

Jay did alot for wilco and obviously a great musician and a solid as guitar player, but i dont blame jeff at all for having him leave the band. Tweedy for me was always and will always be the leader of the band. and they've gone on to great things since too. but jay's a huge talent.

reply

i was going to say he looks like the trucker-cap-wearing writer on "30 rock", but you're right!

reply

"phillip seymour hoffman in boogie nights. That's jay bennett"
I totally see it!
He's a tool.

reply

Funny... As I was watching, I had cast a biopic in my mind and P.S. Hoffman was a no brainer for Jay. Maybe Jack Black for Jeff.

Funniest part, I thought was the riffing between Jeff and Fred Armisen.

reply

This is indeed true. And Jeff Tweedy is Harvey Keitel in "Mean Streets."

No doubt Jay Bennett's got talent and looks like a sheep dog, P.S.H. and the fat goofy brother on American Chopper but man, he seems like such an annoying, lame personality. I wanted to punch him in the face every time he was on screen.

Why don't you put your f@#king hair back on and come on back, just come on back.
