Is it total fiction or is that camp inspired from a real one?

Throughout the movie I couldn't help but wonder "What camp is this? What was the ethnicity of the prisoners in the camp including David?" Is it mentioned in the movie? I couldn't catch it and I missed the first few minutes, maybe it was stated there. If not, is it mentioned in the book?

This is pretty late but the camp in the book is based on camps in the Soviet Gulag system. They were basically for holding any one deemed an enemy of people/state.

Those this response is way later, the movie was set in Bulgaria. Lots of Eastern European commie countries had "reeducation camps".
