What are your recommendations?

My dad really enjoys this series so I was looking for other movies that he might enjoy. What do you recommend? I'm not just looking for similar movies (like Master and Commander) but other movies that fans of the series also like.

You would most likely enjoy the A&E TV production "Shackleton" about the true and adventurous story of the Arctic explorer. In some ways a bit like hornblower, with the shame impressive production values and really good acting. Great movie, check it out if you can find it.

Another possibility could be the Sharpe series. Although not set at sea, it happens round the same time historically but deals with soldiers

reply

Yes, Sharpe would definately be one to look into. My whole family loves this kind of series and we enjoyed Sharpe even more than Hornblower.

reply

Without a doubt Sharpe is a good choice. I don't know anyone who likes Hornblower that doesn't like Sharpe. But if you're looking for movies that deal with the Royal Navy I'd also recommend Longitude.

Here is a list of our favorite "masculine" adventures:

The Sharpe series of films is excellent; stories about a unit of riflemen during the Napolenoic Wars. There are more than a dozen films in the series, including a new release in 2006. Link to first film of the series:

Longitude is another excellent film about the Royal navy during the 18th century.

The Scarlet Pimpernel: a series of 3 films (there is also a second series available in the UK) about an English nobleman who is a spy during the French Revolution. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0182408/

Ivanhoe - miniseries based on Sir Walter Scott's hero of Medieval England.

Last of the Mohicans - takes place in Americas during the French-Indian Wars between British and French.

Captain Horatio Hornblower R.N.- this film is from the 1950's. The script was written/adapted by Forester himself; stars Gregory Peck as Hornblower. Most fans of the recent series also enjoy this film.

H.M.S. Defiant - I've never seen this film, but have heard it's very good.

Agree with the previous list, but would add The Onedin Line, Danger UXB, Family at War, Town Like Alice, Testament of Youth and Tenko (the latter has more women, but it does concern the other side of war). Try to find the original BBC Last of the Mohicans. The movie one doesn't do justice to the novel. You might try the First Churchills, too. The Last Place on Earth (about Scott's hopeless trek to the Pole) is also excellent.

That's actually a PLUS for the film version, IMO. ;-)

You could have a point there! Poor old JFC could be a bit of a snoozer! I adored the BBC version when I was a kid.

the poldark series was quite good as well. same time period. same theatrical style. more of a soap opera though.

Definitely Sharpe or what about Foyle's War.

It's a Geoffrey Rush thing, you wouldn't understand! Captain of Team Barbossa

Oh, I love Poldark! Recently watched it for the first time.

Thanks for reminding me of Foyle's War and Poldark! Love them both!
