Wybie's grandma doesn't let families with kids inside the pink palace...

So why would she let Coraline's family move in? Just a question.

She probably believed that, whatever took her sister, has died by now. The grandma probably thought a kidnapper had stolen her sister, not a creepy Beldam in an alternate dimension.

Who said she knew? If she asked, Coraline's parents might have guessed she didn't wan't kids in the apartment and just said no. Once the lease was signed there would have been nothing she could have done about it. Also I think she was getting senile.

The grandma gave the doll to Coraline (via Whybe). I think (if I allow myself to be imaginative) at some level the grandma knew that Coraline will be that one exceptional kid who will have the strength to beat the evil and set her sister free...

Whybie found the doll in Grandma's trunk and gave it to Coraline. I highly doubt his grandma intended for it to be given to Coraline since apparently she got really mad that Whybe gave it away.

When the grandmother found out that Whybe gave Coraline the doll she was upset and made him try to get it back.

I wondered about that, too.

My guess is that Grandma had retired from running the family properties, and whoever was in charge of screening rentals didn't take her "no kids" rule seriously. She was a frail old thing when we saw her, after all.

Maybe she was unaware coraline was prt of the family? Wybie seemed surprised to see her. Maybe they moved from out of town.

reply

maybe she really needed the money.

1.Possibly Coraline's parents didn't mention they had a child. However, I like the theory that Wybie's grandmother thought on some level that Coraline was the exception:)

2. Wybie found the doll and gave it to Coraline. The grandmother wouldn't have given it away since it still resembled her twin sister as far as she knew. The Other Mother altered the doll into Coraline, and maybe even left it intentionally where Wybie would find it and set the events in motion.

In the beginning, you'll notice that the parents don't seem concerned about Coraline because they're busy with their work so they probably forgot to tell her that they had a daughter.
