Not all animated movies are meant for children!

Why is it that I've got to read so many posts that say something to this effect: "I took my 6 year old and it was HORRIBLE!" AAARRRRGGGGHHH! Whether a film is animated or not, the storyline and thematic elements are what should guide you in taking a child to a film. Those people probably shouldn't have children in the first place if they can't make that distinction.

"It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. You take away all he's got and all he's gonna have."

I don't think its a stereotype that's the problem. The problem is that every cartoon that comes out these days is PG. So we pretty much know that it won't be suitable for children. Hollywood is not only failing children cinema. But its intentionally trying to corrupt them as well. Now we know where the A bomb shouldve landed.

reply

The real problem is in the rating system and society today, PG means 'Oh hey I can drop my kid off (or watch it with them) no problem and it won't be as bad as those nasty PG-13 violent movies'. What people should realize is that PG stands for 'Parental Guidance' and still says the parents should investigate before showing their children a movie. The problem lies with bad parenting, like most problems these days...

If I'm reading this right you're a *beep* idiot.

Ok............ So 1. of all this movie isn't for children under 10 ! Cause there is a theme removing childrens eyes and eating children and there is a women who is a spider-monster and try's to chase and eat Coraline.... I think this movie is for older children , with another words "Horror for kids"

reply

There is a difference between kids film and family film. A kids film is a film made specifically with kids in mind. A family film is a film made with families in mind, it is made to appeal to adults, teens, older kids and little kids,so everyone has a good day at the movies. You're probably the kind of idiot who thinks that you can be too old for any kind of film.

Simply because it was a movie that applied to an adult audience doesn't make it a good film. People on these threads seem to be getting far too exited by the concept of an animation with adult themes, however you can't overlook the fact that the film was marketed at children and also followed that tradtional halloween animation movie theme.

I disliked the film, although I appreciated it was stylistically beautiful and I enjoyed the characterizations of the main characters. I felt that it was trying to simplify its story in order to apply to a younger audience and ended up making it overly simple and in that respect boring. The second half of the film felt like watching someone else playing a video game, collecting clues and defeating bad guys and being lead from stage to stage by the dead children - yawn.

It disappointed me because although I greatly enjoyed it in the cinema, and to a certain extent that was heightened by watching it in 3d - I bought the dvd and found myself thoroughly bored by it without the 3d experience. I can watch the film in dribs and drabs now and still enjoy it, mostly because I do still love the artwork and its quirky style, but the storyline is far too formulaic for the adult audience it is trying to reach.

So what I'm really trying to say is: don't just defend the film because it applies to an adult audience, its a flawed movie and the fact that its not suitable for 6 year olds isn't the only point of concern.

Very well put, Shiny. I agree with you on this one.

To dislike a film just becasue it's flawed shouldn't even be a reason for disliking a film.
Almost all films contains flaws, you can't find a perfect film.

Going by that logic you should dislike every single movie out there because they are flawed.
You have to look beyond the flaws to truly appreciate a film.
So calling a film bad because it's flawed isn't a good reason.

Back to topic! Unfortunately the sometimes negative stereotype of animated films being meant for children only is very much alive today.Every time I say to my dad I'm going to watch an animated film he looks at me in disbelief.

When will people learn animation isn't a single genre? Animation is just a different way of telling a story on film, like black-white film.
You can make almost any genre in animation, but that doesn't by any means mean that you should take your child to see it.

If people started to read what the picture was about before taking their 6 year old with them perhaps they wouldn't be so surprise?
Honestly, don't people read summary's about a film before going to see it?

All movies are flawed, so that's kind of a dumb criticism...

If you've heard of it, it's already too mainstream for me.

I agree with you 100%..

Just wanted to point out that in Finland this movie is rated K7 (which means that a 7-year-old can watch it alone and a 5-year-old with an adult.

In Finland the rating doesn't tell who is the focus group for the movie. It barely tells that who the movie is not harmful for. For instant - many sport movies are K3, but hardly any 3-year-old will enjoy one.
The people who give the ratings in Finland are child psyocholy and media experts (from different organisations). So I think a 6-year-old wouldn't get any scars when watching this with a parent.
But I do agree that this movie is not a kids movie.

The movies grown on me over the years. I used to not like it. Now it's pretty good.

I do have to say that after I saw this movie for the first time, I called my sister to tell her not to let my nephew see it. It would have absolutely terrified him. He's 9 now and can watch it without a problem, but it would have given him nightmares when it first came out.
