Indeed.
I watched it because of Martin Clunes, an actor I like very much, and I enjoyed the story which is fascinating. This guy was so well-mannered, charming and likeable that I myself would fall for his cons right away. And at the same time he was so cold-blooded, methodical and unshaken that makes my blood freeze. I don't think he was insane at all but he knew very well what he was doing. He wanted plenty of money so he could enjoy a high lifestyle, and didn't care about anything else. When you think that he killed the family of three in a matter of days and then cashed all of their money and sold their properties, pocketing over £60,000 of 1945 (over 1 million in today's money!) and in less than three years he squandered it all on gambling and luxuries... So he had to kill again. And one year later he was broke again, and had to kill again, and that was his undoing. He did away with the rich widow only to pawn her jewels and furs so that he could pay his hotel bill. That was pathetic indeed. And he really thought they would never link him to her disappearance, especially since people knew she was taking a car ride with him? It seems like at the end he was either too self-confident on his cleverness and/or good luck until then so far, or that he no longer gave a s*** about the outcome.
A great film in every aspect: acting, script, cinematography, art direction, costumes, period music and atmosphere.
