Why did I think this was Stephen King?

For some weird reason I remember when this came out I thought it was a Stephen King story adapted. Since then I forgot about it and became a big King fan and then I remembered this and realized that it is not Stephen King. I know that William Goldman wrote the screenplay for the original 1975 version and he's done a number of Stephen King adaptations for film. But that is the only tie I can find to King. Anybody that might know what else could have led me to think that this was a King story?

It was probably because of the pointless ending.

It's (loosely) based on Ira Levin's dark horror novel. Why they decided to turn it into a comedy is beyond me.
