If you compare the 2 movies in that manner - you can include almost any movie that starts out in the present or future then retells past events - in this same context we can compare Gremlins to 2ndhand lions and the Princess Bride - except that there are Gremlins.
there are minor similarities - but they are not a variation on a theme.
