Is this movie like Big Fish?

The synopsi seem a little similar.

It does have the same underlying message about living life to it's fullest, and believing in the truth behind tall tales. The big difference is that in the Secondhand Lions there is more of a story in the present, it doesn't just pertain to the protagonist's past life. You see the uncles becoming more open to the new things that their nephew suggests. The storyline has more of a flashback touch to it with the main focus on the nephew's stay and interaction with his uncles.

It was better than Big Fish.

'Crumbly.. but gooood.'

One of the biggest differences is that Big Fish is a road movie. This isn't.

Big Fish was WAY better than this movie. It's not even close.

The first poster hit the nail on the head by saying this film focuses much more on the present.

The major similarity is the ending, especially the original version that's on the "deleted scenes" of the DVD. While the commentary offers several reasons for the ending that made it to theaters, I think that the unspoken overlying reason was to prevent cries of "Big Fish Ripoff!" after the premier.

Big Fish was released in 2004 even though it shows 2003 next to it's title. The release date for Big Fish was Jan 9, 2004, whereas Secondhand Lions was released Sept 19, 2003.

They are both great and although with some similarities , they both have a unique originallity which makes them worth watching over and over again .
