A great film ruined

This film was clearly wirtten by an 8 year old. A lot of the major events in his life are played out in the most obvious possible way, in terms of the writing. And the dubbing, my god! The acting looked good, but a lot of the time one couldn't tell: the dubbing was that bad. Hoskins is very good in the role though, it has to be said. And at the back of it all you can see how great a story it is; and, despite all it's failings, it is a great film. But it should have been a classic. With a better budget and production quality I think it might have been. It's a shame that it is what it is, but it is a great thing that it exists at all. Oh and, although I think Bob was good in the part, I reckon Cyril Cusack would've been unbelievable in the part of his holiness.

Have you seen another film about John XIII by Giorgio Capitani (2002) with Edward Asner? I have seen only the second part and liked it quite much. I remember the final shot - a beautiful scene of an entry to Heavens. Old pope opens the gates of Paradise and at the same time, he appears as a boy.

But I must say that I like Tognazzi's film as well. Archives are great! Hoskins is not bad!!!
